The Adult Program, the continuing education division of the Great Neck Public Schools, offers wonderful bonding opportunities for parents/grandparents and their children/grandchildren while enjoying a learning experience together. There are also several courses just for students. All meet at the Cumberland Adult Center, 30 Cumberland Avenue, Lake Success.

Maureen Miller-Calamo is extraordinary when it comes to making beautiful objects by folding paper. In her two-session course (Saturday, Oct. 12 and 19, 10:30 a.m. to noon) for parent/grandparent and child, you will make a magnet for your fridge, a French fries holder filled with “fries,” and other simple and fun projects. You will receive a starter supply of paper for $6 payable to the teacher at the first session. Fee: $25 for one adult and one child, age five and up; each additional child $5.
Bond with your child or grandchild while learning chess from a master teacher and chess player, Garrett Christian. This day of chess, on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., is appropriate for both the beginner and the more experienced player. It will lead to many enjoyable hours together at the chessboard. Bring a bag lunch. Fee: $45 for one adult and one child, grades K–6; each additional child $10.

Children, along with their parents/grandparents, will spend playful time together making colorful sun-catchers. On Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to noon. Cristina Cipriani will provide the materials that are needed to make these decorative and reflective objects. Fee: $55 for one adult and one child, ages 6 to 12; each additional child $5.
On Saturday, Oct. 26, from 1:15 to 3:45 p.m., children and adults will learn to paint beautiful flowers of the season with a watercolor artist and teacher, Diane Lieberman. Paint sets (to use in class and to take home) will be provided and are included in the fee. Please bring sponge, old toothbrush, scissors, and pencils. Fee: $44 for one adult and one child, ages 6 to 12; each additional child $20.
A native Chinese speaker and educator, Karen Jia, teaches this well-received, 10-session course on Saturdays, Oct. 5 to Dec. 14 (no class Nov. 30), from 9 to 11 a.m. This course is appropriate for all levels, beginner through advanced. Fee: $185.
Amy Orange, a retired art teacher from South High School, teaches a figure-drawing class for high school students on six Wednesdays, Nov. 6 to Dec. 18 (no class Nov. 27), from 7 to 10 p.m. Life drawings are an important addition to all art portfolios, as well as a crucial part of the Advanced Placement Studio in Art program. Weekly models are included in the fee: $96 for Great Neck School District resident high school students; $106 for nonresident students.
