On President’s Day, Monday, February 18, 2013 the Great Neck Park District Bears (Mites division) attended the NY Islanders-Philadelphia Flyers hockey game at the Nassau Coliseum. As if that weren’t exciting enough, they also got the chance to have a shoot-out on the ice between first and second periods. They were the only team to do so that day so the excitement was running high. The game began at 1 p.m. and the Bears (ages 5 through 8) couldn’t wait to get their time in the spotlight, playing to a sell-out crowd of thousands. The Bears got ready to prepare for their big moment right after the NHL teams warmed up. They were brought into a separate locker area where they changed and got prepared for the shoot-out. It was official Mascot Day at the Coliseum so the players were able to greet numerous mascots from different teams, as the NY Islanders personnel lined them up by the zamboni door. Mascots such as NY Islanders Sparky the Dragon; The NY Mets’ Mr. Met; Brooklyn Knight, the Brooklyn Nets mascot; Thunder Bug, the Tampa Bay Lightning mascot were there among others. When the team got out on the ice, the crowd gave the players a roaring ovation, which got them extremely excited. With two Mite goalies in place guarding the goals, the players got their chance to shoot. After their moment of fame, the team got changed and went to their seats to watch the rest of the game. What an electrifying experience it was for all.
