The United States Merchant Marine Academy men’s basketball team outrebounded Sarah Lawrence 61-40 en route to the Mariners first win of the 2013-14 season last Saturday afternoon at the Admiral’s Classic hosted by Maritime (NY). Nick Sergio (Patchogue, NY) posted a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Danny Collins (Sleepy Hollow, NY) recorded a game high 16 rebounds. Freshman Matthew Miller (Augusta, GA) poured in 16 points and sophomore Andrew Williams (Lantana, TX) added ten points and three blocked shots.
Merchant Marine (1-1) battled neck-and-neck with the Gryphons throughout the first half. However, USMMA pulled away with an 8-2 run to end the period. Hunter Jones (Goodyear, AZ) hit a jumper at the buzzer for two of his nine total points as the Mariners took a 39-31 advantage heading into the intermission.
Sarah Lawrence (0-2) was paced by the 18 points and 11 rebounds from Graham Gilleran. The Gryphons struck for seven three-pointers while each team only turned the ball over 12 times. The USMMA offense grabbed 29 offensive rebounds after shooting 27-of-75 (36.0 percent) from the floor. Merchant Marine was aggressive all afternoon, shooting 17-of-28 (60.7 percent) at the free throw line.
The Gryphons cut the Marines lead to 42-38 on a Brendan O’Connell layup with 15:10 remaining in regulation. From there, USMMA engineered a pivotal 10-0 run to open up a 14-point cushion, which included four points from Miller and was capped by a Sergio layup. The Mariners maintained a double digit lead down the stretch and picked up their first win of the season, 71-61.
The USMMA men’s basketball team will play its first home game Monday, Nov. 25 against Maritime (NY).
