Shouting and cheering all around, Great Neck North High had a spectacular main event this year for the Long Island Special Olympics basketball teams. Being the host, the Great Neck Spirits basketball team not only played well, but supported every team with encouragement, cheering and good spirit. On Sunday, June 7, the main event started bright and early with the National Anthem sung by one of the athletes. It was a great way to start off this tournament of athletes from all over Long Island, who not only competed against each other but also enthusiastically supported one another.
However, the athletes were not the only ones going for the gold in spirit. Volunteers of all ages came to support the Spirits and all of the visiting teams. While every athlete was a winner, Hal Newman, and David Bonom won the two special Joan Gruenbaum awards for best all-around athletes. Great Neck coaches Ed Fuernback, Alan Someck, Diane Polland, Jordana Cohen, Chris Brown, Shelley Greenbaum and Eric Goldstein were very proud of the award winners and all the participants.
The Great Neck Spirits celebration bowling night was held in late May and it helped to pump up the excitement and anticipation for the soon to follow main event —- and it really paid off. Throughout all of the practices, bowling nights, and time spent together with love, the Spirits proved to be more than just a team. They became a tightknit family.
Thanks are sent to all of those who helped and special thanks to Carol Nesdill, the Great Neck Lawyers Association, Waldbaums co-managers Rocco Mileo and Mun Chin for donating the food and beverages and the Apple and Eve Company for providing the juices.
The Great Neck Spirits are excited about the 2009-2010 season which began on Oct. 23, at the Great Neck North Middle School Gym. Please support our team, and become part of our family. Go Spirits!
