Ready To Close The Books

Local teacher Walter Weil is ready to close the books after 34 years of educating students. The technology teacher from the Hicksville School District will be retiring after 14 years of teaching there. Weil was the technology teacher in both the Hicksville High School and the middle school.  

His time spent at Hicksville Middle School was special to him, especially this year.  “The middle school was like a family to me,” said Weil. “The people were closer and closer and nicer and nicer.” His time spent in the school district was a happy one because of how he was treated by all.

 

Mount Saint Mary Welcomes Class of 2017

Michael Romanik, sociology-criminology major from Hicksville, moves bags of clothing into his new residence hall at Mount Saint Mary College. A sunny Hudson Valley day provided a beautiful backdrop for new students moving into Mount Saint Mary College on Aug. 24. Activities as they began their academic journey included moving in, signing onto the campus wide wireless internet, and dropping by the campus store. Student attended a welcome mass before they bade their families farewell.

 

Sweet Retirement For Hicksville Teacher

Karen Massaro is ready to close the books on teaching. She has dedicated 32 years to the Hicksville School District, where she served as a music teacher.  

Massaro has taught at several schools during her tenure in the district. She taught at East Street Elementary School for 13 years, Woodland Elementary School for 10 years, Lee Avenue Elementary School for 12 years and Dutch Lane Elementary School for seven years. Splitting her time in between schools for many years was no easy task.

Sweet Retirement

Hilary Sperber is ready to retire after serving as a band and orchestra teacher in the Hicksville School District for 35 years.

She made her mark in the music department at Dutch Lane, East Street and Fork Lane Elementary School, her longest tenure. She got her start as a music teacher in 1977, where she began as a side teacher per-diem. In September 1983, Sperber officially joined the full-time ranks. She ran the band and orchestra programs, starting in 1993.

 

Trinity Lutheran Student Helps Tornado Victims

Trinity Lutheran School 4th grader Lacey Eberhart recently raised $1,000 in aid for those affected by the tornadoes in Moore, OK. The Eberhart family suffered heavy damage to their home during Hurricane Sandy and this experience inspired Eberhart to help those in a similar need. Trinity Lutheran School students and families contributed donations through weekly chapel offerings and a Dress Down Day fundraiser. Eberhart will present the funds to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Moore, OK where they will be used to provide disaster relief to members of the community.

Marine Resources Poster Contest

Town Supervisor John Venditto and Councilman Chris Coschignano presented citations to students whose entries in the Marine Education Day Poster Contest were selected for awards. Marine Education Day is held each year to educate children about marine resources. The young artists, who are pictured holding their award winning poster, are from East Lake School in Massapequa, Bayville Intermediate School, Burns Avenue School in Hicksville, Old Country Road School in Hicksville and Locust Valley Intermediate School, with their teachers.
