Marine Resources Poster Contest

Town Supervisor John Venditto and Councilman Chris Coschignano presented citations to students whose entries in the Marine Education Day Poster Contest were selected for awards. Marine Education Day is held each year to educate children about marine resources. The young artists, who are pictured holding their award winning poster, are from East Lake School in Massapequa, Bayville Intermediate School, Burns Avenue School in Hicksville, Old Country Road School in Hicksville and Locust Valley Intermediate School, with their teachers.

Two Hicksville High School seniors received first annual scholarships

The Eyes of Learning is pleased to announce that on June 6, two graduating Hicksville High School seniors received the first annual scholarships in honor of our founder, Elaine Resnik. This school was selected because Resnik lived in Hicksville until recently and the Eyes of Learning conducts its lectures and presentations at Levittown Hall in Hicksville.


Holy Trinity Junior Advances In Math Fair

For the second year in a row, Holy Trinity Diocesan High School student, Emily Jannace, presented at the 2013 Al Kalfus Math Fair and advanced to the final round. The title of her project was, “The Four Color Problem.”

Holy Trinity has participated in the math fair for over 16 years and every year they have students bring home a medal.  Math teacher, Mary Clare Pellett, coaches the team and was very proud, “Emily worked extremely hard on her project and it paid off.”


Hicksville Civic Association Scholarship Winners

It was a great night at the Hicksville Library on Thursday, June 13 as the Hicksville Gardens Civic Association awarded six scholarship winners. Hicksville High School seniors, Caitlyn Garger, Veronica Grebe, Harneet Gulati, Kristine Jao, Kiran Sharma and Pawandeep Singh were each awarded a $500 check by Scholarship Committee Chairman Ed Bossong. Four of the scholarships were sponsored by local businesses including Met Food Markets, Perfect Pharmacy, Perillo Fuel Oil and Delco Plaza.

“We had more scholarship winners this year than ever before which is definitely a great thing in our economic times,” said Bossong. “These kids were very committed to making the community of Hicksville a better place to live.”

The Brookville Center hosts prom for

autistic students, salon reaches out

As the warmer weather sets in, the beginning of prom season takes off at the beginning of June like clockwork every year. For the autistic students at the Brookville Center for Children’s Services however, the May 31 prom was a first this year.

The residence program administered by the center educates kids with autism up until age 21, according to Beth Hudson, the senior director at the school. There are 25 students between the Lido Beach and Glen Cove houses, Amy Keegan, assistant director of community resources at the center, said.


Woodland Kick-Kats

The Woodland Kick-Kats finished their season by marching in the Memorial Day Parade. The coaches and many girls proudly marched and performed their routine for the many spectators. The Woodland Kick-Kats meet every Friday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. between February and May.

They perform in the annual Woodland Talent Show and show their families their magnificent dances. At the end of the season they enjoy a pizza and ice cream party, perform for their families, and can’t wait to receive their trophy and group picture! All of the girls have fun while learning the skills of Kickline. Many thanks to the volunteer high school coaches and to Colleen Ruff, Lisa Robertaccio, and Nancy Heuser, the Woodland Kickline directors.

Hicksville High School Spring Concert

The Hicksville High School string orchestra, string ensemble, Madrigal Singers and wind ensemble demonstrated their musical versatility and talent in a series of three spring concerts held in the high school auditorium.

The string orchestra, directed by Amy Noll, opened the second concert with three songs, highlighted by a luscious rendition of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” that featured Brian D’Addario on electric guitar.
