Scholarship Created in Late Resident’s Honor

Several hundred people gathered Sept. 13 at Boulder Creek in Hicksville for the Ricky Greene Memorial Benefit. Proceeds, which totaled approximately $10,000, will go to establish a Hicksville High School scholarship in honor of the late Richard “Ricky” Greene.

During Oyster Festival

The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) officially transferred two retired LIRR locomotives – No. 397 and No. 398 to the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum for display with their historic equipment collection as part of the yearlong celebration of the rail road’s 175th anniversary. The two mini locomotives – now known as Dashing Dan and Dashing Dottie – were used as “switching locomotives” in the LIRR’s Morris Park diesel servicing and repair yard in Richmond Hill, Queens.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced Sept. 21 that Hicksville resident Craig Ginsberg has pleaded guilty to grand larceny after operating a Ponzi scheme that promised investors he could procure gift cards to nearby stores at steep discounts and then stealing nearly $2.4 million of their money. Ginsberg, 48, pleaded guilty to the top count of grand larceny – 2nd degree in exchange for a promised sentence of 3.5 to 7 years in prison at his Oct. 29 sentence date.

Carousel Now Fully Licensed by New York State

Carousel Day School in Hicksville has started the new school year fully licensed. Under the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), the agency that oversees a day care provider caring for three or more children more than three hours a day, Carousel is now licensed to accommodate 102 children.

Gina Russo recognized a dangerous situation when she saw the Wantagh Parkway Bike Path, also known as the Ellen Ferrant Bicycle Path, back in February. The 4.5 mile paved path runs from Jones Beach State Park to Cedar Creek Park along the Wantagh Parkway and is utilized by thousands of residents weekly who like to walk, jog, bike, and rollerblade.

The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Hicksville will hold its 33rd annual Greek Festival on Friday, Sept. 11 from 5 to 11 p.m. and on Saturday, Sept. 12 and Sunday, Sept. 13, noon to 11 p.m. The festival will take place on the grounds of the church, which is located on Field Avenue just south of Old Country Road and west of South Oyster Bay Road.
