The Hicksville resident of more than 50 years is a World War II veteran and is now in the running for New York State Legionnaire of the Year.
When learning of his commendation, Mauro, who organizes the myriad functions and events for Post 421, said he was “elated to hear the news” after he was considered for the award several years back but didn’t win.
Mauro was also the Grand Marshal for the recent Hicksville Memorial Day Parade and was responsible for the success of the 2011 parade and ceremony.
Hicksville Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander William Walden described Mauro and his wife, Terry, as “some of the nicest people you will ever meet.” Walden hailed Mauro as a “stand-up guy” who helps solidify the relationships between the various veterans’ organizations in the area and is a “tremendous asset” to the Hicksville community.
“We congratulate John, his lovely wife, Terry, and all of the Mauro family … and we thank him for his service to our country and the Hicksville community,” Walden said.
