Josephine Dilger passed away on Sept. 19, 2009. She was a 63-year resident of Hicksville, first on Nicholai Street and later on Ninth Street. She was born on July 1, 1909 in Wemding, Bavaria, Germany, and immigrated to the United States in 1928.
She was a member of the St. Ignatius and Our Lady of Mercy Senior Groups for over 25 years. She was the beloved mother of Gertrude Wiegand (Werner) and Rosemarie Burrafato (Joseph). She was the cherished grandmother of eight and beloved great-grandmother of 14.
A funeral Mass was held on Sept. 22 at St. Ignatius RC Church and interment was at Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury.
Vincent J. Maietta, of Hicksville, died on Sept. 21, 2009. A U.S. Army veteran, he was a 50-year member of K of C Joseph Barry Council and head usher at St. Ignatius RC Church. Husband of Eleanora G. Mildred Norma Krahn, 86, of Hicksville, died peacefully at home surrounded by family, on Aug. 16, 2009. She is survived by her husband of 63, Frederic A. Krahn; her son Rick Krahn, his wife Peggy and daughter Leann; and by her daughter Liz Rock, her husband David Rock and their children, Heather, Michael and Julianna.
She was born in 1922 in Milwaukee, WI, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in art history. She worked in the Milwaukee and New York public libraries.
Visitation at the Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Home, 125 Old Country Rd., Hicksville, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. Funeral service Saturday at 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
Isobel (Breit) Castoro, 93, formerly of Plainview, passed away in Hudson, FL, on Aug. 8, 2009. She was a member of the Red Hat Society. She is survived by her son, Carl of Hicksville and daughter Cathy Snyder of New Paltz, NY, as well as five grandchildren. Widow of Michael P. Castoro.
Isobel was “Rosie the Riveter” and the first woman to receive an “A” rating for her work in defense during WWII. She also aided in the capture of a saboteur.
