I am writing in the hope that you can assist us in acquiring emergency funding that would help us with our escalating costs. This organization constructs the “Walls of Honor” on the Veteran’s Plaza in Nassau County’s Eisenhower Park. This is a nonprofit organization 501-C (3), which has no part of, and has no affiliation with any government agency.

Comptroller’s Report- June 5, 2009

Written by County Comptroller Howard S. Weitzman Thursday, 04 June 2009 16:02

Appointment to Council on State Health Insurance Will Make Nassau’s Voice Heard

Healthcare issues have always been at the forefront of my policy initiatives, both as County Comptroller and during the 35 years spent in the healthcare field. Throughout my two terms, I have been a squeaky wheel when it comes to finding ways to trim the escalating costs of Nassau County’s health benefits. Several years ago I persuaded the County Legislature to eliminate the practice of offering two family health benefit policies to one family, to lengthen the number of years of employment required to vest lifetime retiree health benefits and to increase the health benefit buy back amount to encourage employees with other coverage options to drop County health benefits.

Trustee-Elect Extends Thanks

Thursday, 28 May 2009 17:45

I wish to express my sincere gratitude for the confidence the Hicksville community displayed in electing me trustee to the Hicksville Board of Education on May 19. I also wish to issue a special thank you to my family and the people who assisted me in achieving this endeavor.

I look forward to working with the community, students, staff, administration and board trustees. I am sure that the administration and trustees for the board of education will work with me to ensure a smooth transition.

Once again, I thank everyone.

Maureen Lee

Hicksville Board of Education

Editorial: A Letter From St. Ignatius

Thursday, 21 May 2009 17:17

The Hicksville Superintendent of Schools Maureen Bright recently mailed a letter to the parents of Hicksville students attending non-public schools, which asked them to expedite their decisions about where their children will attend school for the coming year.

This letter cited the current economic environment as an impetus for people to consider enrolling their children in the public schools next year. It also placed unnecessary pressure on them to “make their decision as soon as possible” and “register your child immediately.” There is no cut-off for registration in this district and schools are obligated to educate all residents whenever they decide to register.

Editorial: BOE Trustee Extends Thanks, Speaks Out

Thursday, 21 May 2009 17:15

I have been a trustee on the Hicksville Public Schools’ Board of Education for the last four years. I sought re-election to my seat again this year, but lost to my opponent, Maureen Lee. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported me.

First and foremost, I would like to thank my family, not only for supporting me now but for the last four years of sacrifices that they have made so that I could sit on the board. To all my friends, who penned letters endorsing me, and made phone calls, etc., thank you for your support and your trust. I would also like to publicly thank the Hicksville Congress of Teachers and the Secretaries Union for their endorsement and support.

Letter: Support for Owens - Cynthia Glynn

Thursday, 14 May 2009 17:23

Yet another school year has flown by, and the school board elections are upon us again. The school board election is somewhat more important to me than even our local government elections, in its immediacy, in the way that it affects my children directly, daily; and that the outcome of the election (and the budget vote!) has the potential to “help them or hurt them” as they apply to colleges in the near future.

Both of my children will be attending the Hicksville High School next year, one graduating and one just beginning. They have been in the district since kindergarten, and though all the school years are important, I find myself even more attentive to school policies and elections during their last few years in Hicksville Schools.

Letter: Support for Owens - Lori Pietrafesa

I am a Hicksville resident for 11 years and currently have two children in the Hicksville Schools. I have had the pleasure to serve on the board of SEPTA (Special Education Parent-Teacher Association) with Joanne Owens. Mrs. Owens is up for re-election as a member of our board of education.
