Runners Edge, GLIRC to Host Winter Fun Run February 28

Runners of all ages and levels of ability are invited to join in the fun at the annual Runner’s Edge Winter Fun Run on Sunday morning, Feb. 28.  The run, which is being co-hosted by the Runner’s Edge and the Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC) with Runner’s Edge CEO Bob Cook and GLIRC Fun Run Chair Sam Zinn sharing the event director’s chores, will start and finish in the Municipal Parking Lot in back of the Runner’s Edge, 242 Main Street in Farmingdale. The starting horn will go off at 9 a.m.

 

Holy Family CYO’s 2010 Spring Track Registration

Registration for Holy Family CYO’s 2010 spring track season starts in April but the time to sign up is now. CYO track is open to girls and boys in kindergarten through eighth grade.

 

NC Parks Accepting Picnic Reservations

Picnic reservations for the coming season may be made at Nassau County parks beginning Monday, Feb. 1. Reservations can be made for the following parks:

• Bay Park: 571-7821 - make reservations at Grant Park

• Cantiague Park: 571-7056

• Cedar Creek Park: 571-7470

• Christopher Morley Park: 571-8113

• Cow Meadow Park: 571-8685 – during winter, reservations taken at Rev. Arthur Mackey Sr. Park.

• Eisenhower Park: 572-0348 - special activities bldg., parking field #8

• Grant Park: 571-7821

• Inwood Park: 571-7894 – reservations taken at North Woodmere Park.

• Rev. Arthur Mackey Sr. Park: 571-8692

• Nickerson Beach Park: 571-7700

• North Woodmere Park: 571-7801

• Wantagh Park: 571-7460

Reservations must be made in person at park locations, and a valid Leisure Pass and appropriate payment (fees depend upon group size) must be presented to obtain a confirmed reservation. Payment can be made by cash, check (made out to “Treasurer of Nassau County”) or credit card (at some locations). “Rain-or-shine” shelter areas are available at Cedar Creek Park, Rev. Arthur Mackey Sr. Park, Nickerson Beach Park and Wantagh Park.

County regulations require that 75 percent of all picnic participants be Nassau County residents. A special permit is required for the use of alcoholic beverages, and this permit must be purchased at least one week in advance of any reserved or unreserved picnic.

To make catering arrangements, patrons must contact the park concessionaire, Dover Caterers, at 933-4444, ext. 12 or 16. Picnic reservations must be secured from the individual park before catering can be arranged.

 

St. Ignatius Loyola’s Flag Football Winners

The sixth, seventh and eighth grade physical education classes at St. Ignatius Loyola School recently concluded their flag football unit. All of the students learned the basic skills of football and competed in games during their physical education classes.  

 

Caumsett State Park to Host Annual Runs This March

The Mountain Ultra Trail Council of USA Track & Field has designated the Caumsett State Park 50 Kilometer Run to once again be the USA Track & Field National Championship 50K Run for 2010.The 50K run will take place at Caumsett on Sunday, March 7. The accompanying 25K run will serve as the 25K Championship for USATF’s Long Island Association.

 

Amy Palmiero-Winters Finishes First in Ultramarathon

For the first time in the history of competitive distance running, an athlete with a prosthetic leg has won the overall title in a race. On Jan 1, below-the-knee amputee Amy Palmiero-Winters of Hicksville, an employee of A Step Ahead Prosthetics and director of Team A Step Ahead, took first place at the Arizona Road Racers “Run to the Future” 24-hour ultramarathon.
