Meeting With Congressman Ackerman

“Happy is a relative word,” said U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman, when asked if he is happy with the health care bill recently passed in the House of Representatives. Meeting with the Anton Newspapers’ editors last week, the congressman said, “I’m glad the bill passed … but we could have done better.” Congressman Ackerman said that the bill is not his “ideal,” but that at least this was “progress.”

Elaborating further, the congressman said that he would have voted for “portable health care.” He went on to say that he believes it is “essential” for people to be able to keep their health care when they become ill and it is important for everyone to be able to get health insurance even with “pre-existing conditions.”

Asked if he knew what President Barack Obama thought, Congressman Ackerman said that he felt that the president was “pleased,” and, “unlike Hillary Clinton had done” years ago, the president had given the “basic parameters” for health care … “and then we did it.” But Congressman Ackerman then noted that “The Senate can come up with a completely different product.”

Congressman Ackerman expressed his “disappointment” that abortion and a woman’s right to choose was not included in the House bill.

The New Hyde Park Village always remembers its veterans on Veterans Day by holding a very solemn and impressive ceremony on the grounds of the village, corner of New Hyde Park Road and Jericho Turnpike.

This year, as has been in the past New Hyde Park Village Mayor Daniel Petruccio gave the keynote address.

He said:

“On this the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour we take the time to honor our veterans. Those brave men and women who have answered the call and come to the defense of freedom and liberty wherever it is threatened. From the first volleys of the Revolutionary War to the fire fights and skirmishes going on at this moment in Afghanistan and Iraq we are compelled to recognize the true American heroes. The quality that is consistently found in all heroes is courage. The dictionary describes courage as the ability to face danger, difficulty, uncertainty, or pain without being overcome by fear or being deflected from a chosen course of action.

NHP Lady Pumas – 3, Farmingdale Fire Balls – 2

The rain and wind of a nor’easter could not dampen the spirits of the girls as they came up big against a very good Farmingdale team en route to a much deserved 3-2 victory. The Lady Pumas continued their hot streak going 3-1-1 in their last 5 games, improving week after week. Saturday’s win was the highlight of the season to date.

Summary: NHP got on the board first about 5 minutes into the game when Cara Becker crashed in on goal, caught the Farmingdale goalie charging out, and lobbed a shot over the goalie’s head to make it 1-0. The first half ended 1-0 NHP. About 5 minutes into the 2d half, Farmingdale dashed in on goal and tied the game 1-1 - and created the makings for an exciting finish. NHP then countered with 2 quick goals of their own. Casey Sanders scored the key of goal of the game – making a beautiful spin move to spring herself into the penalty area off a long ball pass from Izzy Glennon, and then tucking a well-struck ball into the far right post for the 2-1 lead. Katie Krems then netted what would be the game winner, off a nice steal pass from Sophie Leeds that Kate put away for the 3-1 lead. Farmingdale got a goal back to make it 3-2 with about 5 minutes left in the game, but the girls held tough and did a good job playing D to preserve the victory.

October 31
State Bank Of Long Island “Cardinals”
Vs. Ridgewood Savings Bank “Angels”

It was another great outing for the mighty Cardinals who displayed both offensive power and defensive excellence against a very good Angels team today. The hitting assault was led by John Napolitano who not only just missed hitting for the cycle (single, double, triple, 1 RBI, 1 run scored), but made a great diving catch of a hard hit line drive to 3rd base. Also swinging a hot bat was Sean O’Connor (2 singles, 2 RBI, 1 run scored) and Andrew Colgan (single, double, 1 RBI, 1 run scored) who also continued to display impressive fielding skills and a tremendously strong arm in the field. Jake Glueck, who hit a single and his third double of the season, and Anthony DePompeis, who hit 3 singles, combined to drive in two runs and score another two runs. Scott Schanter displayed great range at 2nd base with a nice play of a sharply hit ball to nail the runner at 1st base and contributed offensively with a single and a run scored. Grant Joseph not only hit a single but was steady at 2nd base while Alessandro Lacerra did a solid job in the outfield and behind the plate as catcher. Kenny Gensch and Joseph Griffin each flashed the leather in the field.
