Students In The News

New Hyde Park Memorial High School recognized Demetri Heliotis and Sarah Maxwell as its Students of the Month.

The Academy of Finance recognized Heliotis as an outstanding academic student. His teachers report that he is a dedicated student who is a pleasure to have in class.

Heliotis is also quite involved in school and community activities. He is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America.

Heliotis is an active volunteer in the youth program, GOYA, at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Hempstead. As a volunteer, Heliotis has helped in making food runs, where he distributes food donations to those less fortunate. In addition, Heliotis is one of two captains for his altar boy team.

As a customer service representative at Northeastern Group Ltd., an insurance agency, Heliotis says, “This position has helped me to develop my self-confidence and given me the ability to deal with a variety of customers daily.” Heliotis’ career goal is to become a CPA. He would like to study accountancy at St. John’s University or CUNY Baruch in the fall.

Maxwell is an outstanding student in Ms. Rizzuti’s 11th- and-12th grade physical education classes. She is an excellent role model for the younger students in and out of the gymnasium. In each class, Maxwell demonstrates leadership, communication and cooperation skills. She is a vital part of the Varsity Volleyball team where she works hard every day and shows sportsmanship towards her opponents.

She is an overall successful student and was acknowledged by the Nassau County Volleyball Association by receiving this year’s scholar athlete award.
