Herricks Shines In History Day

This year Herricks High School presented projects that were judged for New York State History Day on Monday, April 28. The district took top prizes in many categories as well as earning special awards. Herricks High School had seven out of their 11 projects win awards and five of those projects will be competing at the National competition in College Park, Md. in June.   

 

•Justin Senzer won first place for his documentary “The Empty Promise of Bhopal: Evolution of a Disaster.” He also won the Bassett Health Care Award.

 

•Angel Ding, Ravina Jain and Sachit Singal won second place for their group documentary “Unveiling the Truth: Women Under Khomeini.”

 

•Vanessa Sun won third place for her individual performance titled: “Checkmate: The Bobby Fischer Story.”

 

•Sabreen Bhuiya  won first place for her individual performance titled “The Square Deal.”

 

•Neil Patel, Ashwin Viswanathan, Sahil Abbi won third place for their group performance “Euthanasia.”

 

•Dustin Liu won first place for his individual exhibit “Crude Waters.”

 

•Marielle Lenowitz, Ashley Skaria, Lauren Paik, Gina Yoo won second place for their group exhibit “Blood on the Bars” and they also won the New York State Historical Society Award. 

 

•Maisha Savani and Irene Yip won third place for their group website “The Scopes Monkey Trials.”

 

•Joshua Somrah won the National Maritime Historical Society Award for his exhibit “Hijacking the High Seas.”

 

There were a total of seven senior projects from the Long Island region that have projects moving to the national level, with Herricks High School winning five.
