Nassau County Police Activity League Special Needs Unit hosted the recent Special Olympics New York Basketball Tournament held at Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center home of Nassau County PAL (NCPAL). Thirteen basketball teams, each with up to ten players, participated in the games. NCPAL-

Special Needs Unit Knights; NCPAL New Hyde Park Knights; SCO Owls; Commack Sharks; Long Island Lions: ACDS Thunderbolts, AHRC Starz and for the first time the Oakville Skywalkers, a Canadian team, competed on the court to demonstrate their skill and spirit of sportsmanship. After the games gold, silver and bronze medals and ribbons were awarded to each of the players.

 

Lacrosse Clinic Kicks Off Next Week

Dina Nicastro and Melissa Montreuil are best friends who have been playing lacrosse together since third grade. The New Hyde Park Memorial High School graduates developed their talents early on, participating in PAL lacrosse clinics and taking those talents to college where they excelled in the sport. Now, the two want to help other local girls succeed  by hosting a girl’s lacrosse clinic at Memorial Park for three Sunday’s in September.

 

Mets Stars Visit Cohen’s

New York Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler and catcher Travis d’Arnaud brightened the day for some patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center last week in New Hyde Park, posing for pictures and handing out gifts and autographs. The players hung out with the kids in the afternoon, playing video games and answering questions.

They also found the time to make the rounds, stopping by bedsides to spread some cheer. Mr. Met also joined the tour and was a big hit with the children, who peppered him with questions about everything from his four-fingered hand to the whereabouts of the missing Mrs. Met.

The Sewanhaka Indians football team has a season of change in store.

The Indians have moved up from Conference III to Conference II, due to an increase in enrollment, and are set to face teams that they have never seen before, according to head coach George Kasimatis.

“It is hard to gauge where we will be in this conference,” he said. “There is a lot of uncertainty as where we fit in.”

Firecats Beat Huntington In Thrilling Finish

The New Hyde Park Firecats defeated Huntington’s HBC Sudden Impact in a shootout in the Girls-Under-13 State Open Cup final recently. After tying 1-1 in regulation, New Hyde Park advanced from the shootout, 3-1. 

 

New Hyde Park’s Izzy Glennon beat three defenders and chipped the HBC keeper to equalize after HBC’s Ryan Conway scored in the first half.

Big Daddy Football Camp Hits Home

Recently at Mitchel Field, Richard “Big Daddy” Salgado brought his two communities together for an unforgettable week of football, fun, and memories with the help of local high school coaches from Sewanhaka Central High School District schools. 

 

Salgado’s first community is his hometown. Raised in New Hyde Park, the 48-year-old former pro said he wanted to “give back to the kids from the same neighborhoods that we grew up in.” After his football career ended, Salgado became an insurance advisor, and is now the founder and CEO of Coastal Advisors LLC.
