Town Honors Firecats, LAX Teams

Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board recognized the athletic achievements of three different teams who call North Hempstead their home at its recent. These teams reached incredible heights in their recent competitions, and they exemplify what hard work and perseverance can do.

The New Hyde Park Lady Jaguars recently defeated the Albany AllyCats  1-0. Jaguar goalie Linda Artuso was fantastic in her strategic play in preventing the Albany squad from scoring a goal. The defensive team of Caitlin McDonough, Catherine Rivera, Nora Higgins, Samantha Corrigan and Andrea Bouzos helped keep the game in the control of the Jaguars by their assertive play on both ends of the field.

The Lady Jags scored a goal on an assist by Zoe Winston that was put into the net by Tesse Cash. The remainder of the offensive force—Cate Conway, Mary Tsahas, Alexandra Caldwell, Sammie Coope, Vrisida Bouzos, and Nicole Orlando—displayed great control of the play throughout the match. 


 

Two Gladiators Choose Sacred Heart

Brennan Scanlon, a New Hyde Park Gladiator baseball standout, received an academic scholarship to Sacred Heart, and will be playing for their club ball team this coming school year.  

 

Scanlon, who also played football and basketball for the New Hyde Park Gladiators, was an All-League center fielder and starting pitcher this past season. He was a constant in the lineup, hitting third, he batted .305 with 16 RBI and flashed his speed as he swiped 11 bases. However, Scanlon states he did not play for personal stats. 

 

“I always focus on winning, not my personal achievements,” he said.

Stormcats Ends With Win

The New Hyde Park U10 Stormcats ended their season on a high note after a recent commanding 5-1 win against the Massapequa Pythons. Dean Caldwell, Colin Coope, Luke Notine, Christopher Ribaric and Jack Kareff each put the ball in the net, with the assistance of offensive payers James Gensch, LJ Tsiforas and Dino Vidaich. Brendan Cooper, Ryan Oommen, LJ Tsiforas, Joseph Vieni and Ryan Wasserman held tight on defense, while Brendan and Joseph tag teamed in goal to hold the Pythons to just one goal.

 

Dalton Tops NHP Funeral In Championship 

Dalton FH’s bats ignited in the final inning of play to capture the Farms League title recently. Trailing 8-5 going into the top of the sixth, Manager Farelli’s huddle inspired a come from behind rally to defeat a very tough NHPFH team. 


 

Smith Chooses Monroe For Football

Sewanhaka High School’s football standout Elijah Smith is taking his talents to Monroe College after receiving a partial scholarship for this coming fall.  

 

Smith’s electric speed and versatile play as a slot wide receiver and defensive back for the Indians, as well as punter and punt returner, helped catch the eye of those at Monroe College. 

 

To succeed at the college level, the 5-foot-10, 165-pound Smith says he has to continue to hit the weight room in order to get bigger and “put more meat on my bones.” 

 

Head Coach George Kasimatis believes Smith’s explosive style of play will translate to the college level. 

 

Highlanders Cap Undefeated Season

The Herricks Middle School eighth-grade baseball team recently completed its undefeated season, finishing 10-0. The squad was comprised of high character student athletes who played the game “the right way” - hard; were solid defensively, and supported one another throughout the season. The boys learned a great deal about perseverance and just how difficult the game of baseball is. 

 

The team was coached by Dennis Conroy and included John Bono, Dominic Carella, Jordan Chin, Matt Collins, Eric DelValle, Kyle Haase, Thomas Haug, Jordan Idaspe, Andrew Imperatore, Mike Lee, CJ Marciano, Mike Marcy, Max Moreno, Dominick Piccirillo, Ryan Slattery, Mike Toohig and Mike Gao.

Sewanhaka Honors Athletes

Sewanhaka High School honored its senior athletes who received scholarships to colleges for the upcoming fall semester on June 9. Celestina Pipia is attending University of Massachusetts Lowell for track and field, Kristina Genova is headed to LIU Brooklyn for bowling, Tyler Regnieris will be attending Rutgers University for soccer and Dominick Robergeis attending University of Bridgeport for soccer, while Elijah Smith will attend Monroe College for football.

Wild Cats Take Tourney

The New Hyde Park Wildcats Boys U8 Pumas participated in the B-Active Commack Cup Memorial Day Soccer Tournament, and finished in first place. The tournament was a two-day event, in which the boys played two games on Saturday and two games on Sunday, in Bracket D.

The boys won three out of the four games, beating Northport/Storm 6-1, East Islip Blue 5-1, and Syosset Red 6-1, losing only to East Islip Blue 2-1.

 

The players representing the Pumas were Alexis Avila, Liam Booth, Tyler Ciprut, Patrick Connolly, Jordan Eisenberg, Ryan McPartland, Rylan Moraes, Alan Sikora, Brandon Thomas, Christian Thomas, and Francesco Vecchio.

 

The coaches were Craig Booth and assistant coaches Dariusz Sikora, Daniel Eisenberg, Brendan Moraes, and Sean McPartland.
