The June 9 fire on Gardiners Ave. was reported at 6:10 a.m. and brought over 75 firefighters to the scene.
Under the command of Chief Jeff Lindgren, Assistant Chief Jason Jackowitz reported a working fire immediately followed by a report of a person missing, after the family occupants notified him that their grandfather was still inside. He entered the home but was unable to reach a rear bedroom due to fire conditions.
As units arrived they began an aggressive search for the missing man. Lieutenant Kevin Haller entered through a rear door adjacent to the burning room and crawling toward the fire room found the unconscious man lying in the doorway. Lieutenant Haller and Probationary Firefighter Elliott Ser had pulled the man half way out when members of Rescue 2 came to his aid.
According to police, Raymond Sambolin, a resident, suffered smoke inhalation and burns was rushed to the Burn Unit of Nassau University Medical Center. He succumbed to his injuries early Tuesday morning.
The fire was confined to the rear of the Levitt-style cape and was quickly under control with no injuries to any firefighters. The fire caused moderate damage to the structure and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time but is classified as accidental by Arson Squad detectives and Nassau County Fire Marshal Laakso.
The Levittown Fire Department was requested for a Fast Truck to the scene and the Seaford, Bellmore and Massapequa fire departments relocated into fire headquarters to provide protection to the fire district.
