Detective Sgt. John Mateer, NCPD Fundraiser

Friends and family will gather to raise funds for Detective Sgt. John Mateer of Nassau County Police Department on April 21 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Mulcahy’s Pub and Concert Hall, 3232 Railroad Avenue in Wantagh. Mateer was a dedicated member of the Nassau County Police department since 1985. He lost his wife Carol to cancer in 2003 and was raising his four children by himself when he also became terminally ill. After a brave five-year battle, Mateer passed away on Dec. 29, 2012. Tickets to the event are $60 and include live music featuring Secret Circus and Half Step, a dinner buffet, open bar, raffles and giveaways. 

Nunsense II: The Second Coming

General Meeting 

Levittown Community Council’s general meeting will be held on April 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the large boardroom of the Levittown Memorial Education Center. The Levittown School District budget for 2013-14 will be discussed by a school district representative. All district residents are welcome to attend. Preservation Society Meeting

Drinking Water Meeting

The League of Women Voters is hosting an information session, “What About Our Drinking Water?” at the Levittown Public Library on April 24 at 7:30 p.m. Topics include potable water for generations, existing problems and solutions, and more. Join Sarah J. Meyland, an associate professor in the department of environmental technology at New York Institute of Technology. 

Fire Department Fundraiser

The Levittown Fire Department Rescue 4 will be having a fund raising event at the T.G.I. Friday’s at 3535 Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown on April 24 from 4 to 11 p.m. Spend $20, T.G.I. Friday’s will donate $5 to the fire department. Patrons must present a flyer for the event.

News stories continually alert us to a child whose trust has been betrayed by a predator. Thankfully, there are things that parents can do to prevent it. Join Anthony Zenkus, LMSW, director of education and mental health services, on Tuesday, May 7 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Island Trees Public Library, to learn to recognize warning signs in adults who may wish to harm children, and some simple steps to help you minimize the opportunity that your child could ever be harmed.
