Third-grade students at Abbey Lane Elementary School have been studying Mexico’s culture, language, flag and points of interest. The social studies unit then culminated in a Cinco de Mayo celebration in each of the grades’ classrooms. Students were encouraged to bring in their favorite Mexican foods to share with classmates while listening to Spanish music.
There were also many educational activities. In Susan Zizza’s classroom, the students decorated sombreros using a directional glyph (color-by-choice exercise) and wore their new hats to their Mexican feast. In Vicki Bartolomeo’s class, the unit of study culminated in a celebratory snack of popular Mexican food.
