Levittown Students Attend Hofstra MathApps

Levittown students Bhargava Arunachalam, Khushi Desai and Caroline Doglio of Wisdom Lane Middle School and Casey Butcher of MacArthur High School are among 50 Long Island students who have been selected to attend Hofstra University’s MathApps Saturday Academy.

Last October, Hofstra University was allocated a $30,000 grant from Motorola’s Innovation Generation Program to create the MathApps Academy. The goal of the program is to allow students to expand their math skills and explore STEM—standing for science, technology, engineering and mathematics—education and career pathways through enrichment experiences with experts and industry professionals on a more advanced level.

The students were chosen through a highly competitive selection process with consideration of their interest in STEM education and their desire to create apps that can solve a problem in their community. Bhargava proposed an app to help locate public buses to determine whether or not they are on schedule, while Khushi suggested the development of an app to locate dogs. Caroline recommended an app for students to receive alerts about upcoming quizzes, tests and homework. Casey also proposed an app to enable a person to charge a cell phone by linking up to another user’s cell phone.
