MacArthur Wrestling Team Score Big at Tournament; Coach Retires

The annual MacArthur Holiday Wrestling tournament took place on Dec. 5. The event marks the opening event for the MacArthur Generals who look to kick off the season on a high note. They are also working to end the decade on top of Nassau County wrestling.

The Generals used an army of wrestlers to once again take the team title with a total of 336 points. Crosstown rival Division Avenue H.S. finished in second place with 225 points followed by Suffern H.S. (Section I) with 213 points, Mepham H.S. with 134 points, Sewanhaka East H.S. with 102 points, Roslyn H.S. with 78 points and Lawrence H.S. finishing with 70 points.

The Generals also crowned seven individual champions. At 96 pounds: Kevin Herold, 125 pounds: Mike Palermo, 130 pounds: Angelo Rella, 140 pounds: Tom Malinowski, 152 pounds: Tyler Dunne, 171 pounds: Nick Marrero and at 189 pounds Sal Carillo led the charge and went home with the gold medal.

There were also numerous Generals who wrestled back to a top four finish. All the wrestlers put in a tremendous effort to ensure another team title.

After more than 25 years of coaching, Howie Greenblatt is passing on the reins to a new head coach for MacArthur’s wrestling team this year.

“Once a general always a general” certainly rings true here as the new Head Coach Rob Palleta, is a MacArthur wrestling alumni.

While wrestling for MacArthur from 1988 until 1992, Coach Palleta was county runner-up in 1991 and in 1992 won the Nassau County Championship and went on to finish 6th in New York State.  He brings with him 10 years of coaching experience.

Together with returning Coach Tom Bobal and all county wrestlers, Tom Manning, Chris Perez, Tyler Dunne and Joe Giametta, the Generals will compete for their next county title. Best of luck to Coach Paletta and the entire wrestling team!
