The MacArthur boys’ basketball team honored its five seniors Monday. Then the Generals posted a 38-34 win against Massapequa in their final home game of the 2009-2010 season.
Sophomore guard William Cheshire’s three-pointer with 2 minutes, 37 seconds remaining gave MacArthur the lead for good. Senior guard Sal Sanquini drained two free throws with 13 seconds left to secure the Generals’ victory.
MacArthur, which concludes its season Feb. 8 at Herricks, honored seniors Rich Barbari, Jeremy Cohen, Andrew Mege, Justin Merk and Sanquini before the tip-off.
Sanquini ran the point for the Generals throughout his senior season, and helped fuel the Generals’ first conference win by scoring seven straight points for MacArthur during a Jan. 11 victory against Long Beach. Mege, who plans to play baseball at Queens College next academic year, was a regular contributor before suffering a season-ending ankle injury Jan. 15 at Oceanside. Barbari’s biggest shot came as a junior, when he hit a last-second baseline jumper against Great Neck North to lift the Generals to a title in the fifth straight tournament in which they participated. Despite being hampered by injuries their senior seasons, Cohen and Merk both set examples with their work ethic in practice.
