The Manhasset Girls Track Team captured second place at the Nassau County track championships held at Westbury High School on May 28 and 29.
The outcome came down to the last relay, the 4x100. The Manhasset team was seeded 12th but were able to put together a great race, finishing fifth and running a season best of 55.5 seconds. Freshmen Kathleen Hanlon, Sara Mitsinikos, and Claudia Sbuttoni, along with juniors Olivia Richter and Catherine Jaronczyk comprised the team that put them ahead of the third place team by 1 1/2 points.
Jasmine Blocker was one of the top track athletes at the meet. She captured the county championship in the 100 meters on Wednesday and followed that with a tough day on Thursday, running both the 400 meters and the 200 meters back to back with about 15 minutes rest. She placed second in the 400, but came back to defeat that same runner winning the 200 meter championship in 25.1 seconds. Her times were 12.4 seconds in the 100 m and 58.8 in the 400 m.
Great performances in the field also helped the team place second. Pat McNish continued her winning ways by placing 1st in the long jump with a leap of 17' 1" and was followed closely by Devon Lawrence's third place finish of 15'8". On Thursday Pat won the triple jump with a 35' 8.5" effort for her second county championship. Devon was sixth with a jump of 31' 11". McNish started the second day with a second place finish in the 100-meter high hurdles.
Next week is the state qualifier meet which will determine the athletes that will represent Nassau County at the State Track and Field Championship on June 13 and 14 at the University of Buffalo. Best of luck to the Manhasset Girls on making it to the States.
