Opinion

Week after week, I read in the Manhasset Press about various traffic infractions occurring on Plandome Road. Yet on a daily basis I encounter the most outrageous behavior by drivers on Shelter Rock Road.

First, the intersection on Shelter Rock Road at the King

Kullen shopping center seems to bring out the worst in drivers. Those heading north on Shelter Rock completely block the intersection as though they'll actually make the light 25 cars back. This makes turning left onto Shelter Rock impossible for drivers exiting King Kullen. So what do many of them do? Plop themselves square in the middle of the intersection against the light. I'm certain every reader of this paper has witnessed this.

Second, when drivers heading north on Shelter Rock want to make the King Kullen light, many create their own left turning lane on the wrong side of the double yellow lines. I often wonder if I am amongst licensed drivers when I see such disregard for traffic laws.

And then I wait, as I too am stuck at the light, for some sort of collision. Most often all I see is some frightening display of road rage.

I have contacted the 6th Precinct on a number of occasions to call attention to this situation to no avail.

What are they waiting for?
