If there’s one thing all who know Library Director Marian Robertson would say is that when Marian has a vision, she is indefatigable until the vision becomes a reality. That is why the Manhasset community enjoys a beautiful new 42,000 sq. ft. state-of- the-art library.
Who is Marian Robertson, the person? When first interviewed for the position of library director, former Library Trustee Senetta Koch was impressed by her sense of adventure, stating, “She parachutes from mountaintops, biked the Grand Tetons, goes on nature hikes in the jungle, and even swam the Amazon with piranha…Marian Robertson will bring the Manhasset Library into the future.” And so she did, forging ahead time and again in her 24 years as library director, accomplishment after accomplishment.
How did Marian Robertson come to possess this spirit and sense of adventure? Growing up in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, her family owned a summer camp – and Marian was right there participating with the campers all summer long sharing their outdoor experiences. In fact, that’s where Marian developed her love of horses and became an accomplished horsewoman. She was married to Lawson Robertson, a true renaissance man, who shared her many interests. They enjoyed their three lovely daughters, Marian, Sarah and Lydia, who gave them a total of three granddaughters and three grandsons – all of whom share their grandmother’s great love of the outdoors.
The future holds promise for Marian. Due to her exceptional skill set and professional experience, she has been recruited by the Long Island Volunteer Center (LIVC) to join their management team. LIVC is the regional resource center for volunteerism across Long Island linking individuals and groups to non-profit agencies. As an affiliate of the HandsOn Network of 250 volunteer centers, it also promotes national programming that advances the reach and impact of service that helps build community.
We all thank Marian Robertson for the many years she gave to the Manhasset community and wish her a long and happy life as she embarks on new adventures. The library board has begun a search for a new director and expects the new person to be on board by the end of the year.
To honor Marian Robertson’s 24 years as Library Director of the Manhasset Public Library, we ask the community to save the date, Sunday, Dec. 5, for a special cabaret program featuring Harvey Granat who will perform a revival of The Songs ‘Cahntinue’ … The Songs and Stories of 5-time Academy Award Winner Sammy Cahn, which he performed at Michael Feinstein’s in NYC. A champagne reception will be held immediately following the program courtesy of the Friends of the library.
