Submitted by the Manhasset School District
The Manhasset Board of Education and the Manhasset Education Support Personnel Association (MESPA) have reached a global settlement of all issues relating to the July 23, 2009 Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) Order.
The total cost of this settlement will not exceed $7.925 million and, depending on the choices of pension for eligible former employees, could be reduced by as much as $340,000. Funds for this anticipated settlement have been accrued; therefore, it will have no effect on the 2010-11 budget or on any budget thereafter. A breakdown of component costs of this settlement follows:
• $3,960,000 for a buyout of the district’s comparable work obligation for 37 eligible former employees.
• $3,250,000 for damages in lieu of back pay and benefits for 39 former employees.
• $375,000 Aggregated Federal Insurance Act (FICA) contribution.
• $340,000 maximum, depending on eligible employee participation, Employee Retirement System (ERS) contribution.
The board of education notes that this settlement agreement was negotiated in a mutually respectful manner that will benefit all parties in this protracted labor dispute. The benefits derived for each party should be viewed within the context of the five-year and future gains in transportation cost reduction. The board acknowledges the cooperation of MESPA leadership and negotiators in addressing the many complicated issues ensuing from the July 23, 2009 PERB Order.
