“Teen’s don’t just drink … they drink to excess” is the topic of discussion at Manhasset CASA’s upcoming “Town Hall” meeting on Thursday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Manhasset High School Auditorium.
Manhasset CASA invites all parents and residents to attend this important meeting which will feature nationally recognized speaker and author Toren Volkmann, From Binge to Blackout, who will tell the story of how his youthful underage drinking caught up with his own family to produce life-altering consequences. Volkmann will candidly share his story as well as provide thought-provoking communication advice for your family.
In 2009, Manhasset middle and high school students reported in the Bach Harrison Prevention Needs Assessment Survey, their participation in numerous risk behaviors including drugs, alcohol, and gambling. Students indicated underage drinking at a rate higher than the national norm.
The meeting will also provide an overview of the 2009 Bach Harrison Prevention Needs Assessment Survey Results with local experts in the field of law, substance abuse, and insurance available for questions. Attending the meeting will be Oscar Michelen, Esq. “The Law Squad,” Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, executive director of Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency (LICADD) and Manhasset’s Nancy Morris, State Farm Insurance agent/owner providing information regarding the health and safety consequences of underage drinking as well as the legal and financial consequences for breaking Nassau County’s Social Host Law.
This program is funded by Manhasset CASA, Manhasset Public Schools, Manhasset SCA and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).
