Obituary: John Benjamin Evans

John Benjamin Evans (Ben), son of Flora (nee Walther) and William H. Evans, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, at Greenwich Hospital of complications from pneumonia at age 87. Born July 19, 1924 in New York City, he resided in Plandome, New York and attended the Manhasset Public Schools. He was an Ensign in the Navy and achieved Veteran’s status as a Second Mate in the Merchant Marine during World War II. He served on tours of France, India, East Africa and South America. He attended Johns Hopkins University after the war, and went to work in textiles for Leslie and Co., Mill Agents, and Burlington Industries in New York City. Ben resided in Riverside and Greenwich, CT from 1961-2004 and later in Stamford, CT. He attended Saint Paul’s Church in Riverside and served as a Sunday School teacher.

Elizabeth (Betty) C. (DeRusha) Schwab, 89, of Manhasset, NY and Naples, FL, died peacefully Aug. 14 at St. Francis Hospital. A longtime resident of Manhasset, she was an avid golfer, loved to read and was a consummate NY Times crossworder. A person with a warm heart, generous spirit and strong character she will be eternally loved by family and friends. 

 

Obituary: Eugene Garges National Hero

After a long illness, Eugene W. Garges passed away at his home in Manhasset on July 17, 2011 at the age of 92. Eugene was born in Bryan, Texas on Sept. 27, 1918 and was raised in New Jersey. Eugene’s lifelong love of aviation and engineering led him to a distinguished military career as a Major in the United States Air Force. He enlisted in the United States military at the age of 21 as a college student. After serving his country in World War II, he participated in the Berlin Air Lift providing food and other necessities to civilians in Germany. In recognition of his critical service in the Berlin Air Lift, Eugene received the Federal Republic of Germany Friendship Award. One of Eugene’s proudest and most rewarding achievements was his service as a Flight Instructor to the Tuskegee Airmen. He was invited to the White House and received a commendation from the White House for his efforts with the Tuskegee pilots. He also received numerous other Air Force medals and decorations both from the United States Government and the former Governor of the State of New York, Mario Cuomo.

Lee Courtney Schroder, 73, of Manhasset, passed away on July 22, 2011.  Courtney will be greatly missed and remembered for his wonderful laugh and his love for life.  Courtney is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Sue Schroder, and his children, Wendy Schroder Haddow and Lee Schroder, son- in-law John (Augy) Haddow, daughter-in-law Ruth Schroder and his loving grandchildren Allison Courtney Haddow, Meghan Haddow, Jack Schroder and Grady Schroder.

Charlotte Maria Reissmuller Baranello of Manhasset, NY and Stuart, FL died Sunday, July 24 in her home, here in NY, peacefully after a 2 ½ year battle with endometrial cancer. She was reposed on Wednesday, July 27 at Holy Rood Cemetery after a funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Charlotte was born to the late Karl and Maya Reissmuller in Queens, NY on June 7, 1941.She just celebrated her 70th birthday in June.

Robert Jeffrey Girillo died June 28, 2011 at Memorial Sloane Kettering Hospital after a three month struggle against lymphomatic cancer. He was buried on July 2 at Nassau Knolls Cemetery after a funeral Mass at St Peters Church. He was 51 years old.

Bob is the son of James and Dolores Girillo, the brother of Donna Girillo Neil of Port Washington and James Girillo of Manhasset. Bob is the uncle of Kristin and John Neil and Jessica and Luke Girillo and the cousin of Dawn McCormick of Manhasset and Anthony Conetta of Tulsa. He is the nephew of Donald Girillo of Port Chester and Joyce Girillo Stuart of Huntington.

Helen Bickell, of Manhasset, died on June 19, 2011. She was the beloved wife of the late William, and loving mother of Cheryl, John and Leigh.

Interment was at Nassau Knolls Cemetery, Port Washington. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
