Mrs. Doris Chester Ostrom, age 74, passed away on Thursday morning, Jan. 12, 2012 at her home on Amelia Island, Florida. She was born May 13, 1937.

Born in Manhasset, she was the younger of two children born to the late Alan and Rae Wurtz Chester. Doris grew up in Manhasset and spent summers as a child at the family’s summer home in South Hampton. She was a graduate of Manhasset High School, Class of 1955, and attended Endicott College in Beverly, MA from which she graduated with a degree in retail merchandising. Doris began her buying career with various independent buying offices in New York City before joining the R.H. Macy Company as a corporate buyer.

Through mutual childhood friends she met and married Anthony D. Ostrom in 1962. In 1965, Tony’s career with Tiffany and Company took them to Chicago, IL. Their first son, Craig, joined the family in 1964 and in 1972, their second son, Jonathan, completed the Ostrom family. In 1975, the family moved to Darien, CT where Doris made new friends, enjoyed sailing and tennis and raising the two boys. Ten years later, they made a new home in Hingham, MA joining longtime friends and neighbors. In the mid 1990’s, upon the urging of friends, they visited Amelia Island, which would become their winter home. In 2000, Tony retired and their lifestyle became centered around their homes in Melvin Village on Lake Winnipesaukee, NH and their Amelia Island Plantation retreat.

Doris loved to garden, play golf and tennis, was an avid reader, a member of the Garden Club of Hingham, the Wolfeboro Garden Club, the Kingswood Golf Club, the Amelia Island Plantation Ladies Association and served on the Women’s Board of the Chicago Boys and Girls Club.

Doris is survived by her husband of 50 years, Anthony; two sons, Craig and Jonathan and their wives, Chris and Lindsay; brother, David Elmore and his three children, Susan Davie, Coaina Nel and David B. Elmore; brother-in-law Roger; and four grandchildren, Coral, Eli, Aaron and Reed. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Alice Ostrom and her children, Chris Wilson and Arthur Male.
