Statement of NYSSBA Executive Director Timothy G. Kremer
When Governor Cuomo took office, he promised bold action to improve New York’s future.
He has delivered on his promise to enact a property tax cap. He has delivered on his promise to restructure state public employee contracts. And he is delivering on his promise to reform the tax system and stimulate the economy.
Once enacted, the new tax code reforms should remove any cloud of uncertainty over whether schools will receive a state aid increase next year. But there is more to be done.
The governor said back in January, “The enormous burden of unfunded and underfunded mandates is breaking the backs of taxpayers, counties and municipalities across the state. These mandates are throwing budgets out of balance and sending local property taxes through the roof.”
Now it’s time for the governor to keep another promise.
Mandate relief was a centerpiece of his “New NY Agenda” and goal of putting “the state’s fiscal house in order.”
We trust the governor will make mandate relief the focal point of his agenda for 2012–and deliver on that promise.
