While reading about Lieutenant Commander Mark Evans and his family (‘’Report From Afghanistan,” Jan. 21), tears welled as I recalled the child Chris-Ann McInerney, now his wife. She was our daughter Debbie’s first friend when we moved to Manhasset in 1976. Her smile and laugh were, and still are, infectious.
Since I lost my sister Diane Urban on Sept. 11, 2001, I feel a special gratitude and respect for Chris-Ann, her husband, children and the McInerney family, who have all sacrificed in an effort to help bring peace and stability to Afghanistan during this war on terrorism.
I used to wonder what life was like in Manhasset during World War II. For more than eight years, we have been at war, but most of us are not enduring the hardships the McInerney-Evans families face.
My family and I thank them from the bottom of our hearts.
