The New Budget

Charles Cardillo, superintendent of schools, told The Manhasset Press what the district cut or reduced in the revised budget that will be put to a vote on June 18.

According to Cardillo, major cuts include the elimination of a high school assistant principal position and a part-time high school fine arts teacher. In addition, the salary of the director of physical education, interscholastic athletics and health services position will be reduced. Collective bargaining also resulted in the retirement of nine employees through the implementation of a retirement incentive.


Manhasset Students Score At Science Competition

Manhasset students Mike Kusnierek and Pat Fahey took first place in the Engineering category at the International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Environment Project Olympiad (iSweeep) Competition in Houston, Texas. Bryan Herbert, Steven Tranchina and Aaron Tabazedah took third place in the Environmental category.

iSweeep is an international science fair that focuses on energy, engineering and environmental projects. iSweeep’s goal is to encourage high school students to explore alternative solutions for a sustainable world.

David Reppucci presented his research project  “Does the Wavelength of Light Affect Algea Production and CO2 Consumption” conducted with Andrew Burke at the first annual CSTL Nassau Science and Engineering Fair held at the Center of Aviation on Saturday, May 19.

His presentation won first place in the Environmental Science Category ($50 prize) and 1st place Overall Middle School Presentation ($175 prize).


Shelter Rock Student’s First Solo Recital

Nine-year-old Daniel Cataldo of Manhasset recently performed his first solo piano recital at the Jeanne Rimsky Theater in Port Washington. Daniel, a fourth grader at Shelter Rock Elementary School, has been studying piano at the Bottazzi School of Music for five years, and has participated in many student concerts in venues including Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall.

“Daniel’s program was varied and showcased his versatility at the instrument as well as his wide-ranging musical capacities,” said Walter F. Aparicio, a pianist who holds an Advanced Certificate in Music Education from New York University and a Masters of Music in Piano Performance from Manhattan School of Music.

The program included Bach’s “Solfeggietto” and Beaumont’s “Tarantelle,” among pieces by Beethoven, Mozart and Aram Khachaturian.
