There were those who have never picked up a tennis racquet before, and there were those who have been playing for some time. But on Monday, June 29 and Thursday, July 1, everyone was playing tennis on the Manhasset High School tennis courts at the first ever Tennis Summer Camp sponsored by the “Court of Champions” Tennis Committee.
Manhasset Crew concluded their successful Spring ’09 season by earning first place medals in the two most prestigious high school crew championships, the Stotesbury Cup Regatta (May 15-16, Philadelphia, PA) and the 75th Annual Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) Nationals Regatta (May 22-23, Mercer Lake, NJ). Manhasset’s Women’s Junior Four (Margot Cyprus, coxswain, Jenny Aitken, Megan Clarke, Ali Margherio, Elizabeth Henry) took Gold medals in both of these elite races, while the Men’s Senior Four (Nick Kavourias, coxswain, Ty Louis, Sebastian Barrera, Joe Calderone, Mike Yee) won Gold at SRAA Nationals, the second consecutive Nationals Gold medal for this winning men’s boat.
Although it would have been difficult to admit it, the Comsewogue defeat probably did provide a much-needed wake-up call. Talent was important but old-fashioned grit, determination and hard work would be much needed if Manhasset was to enjoy the kind of season the team envisioned. And those requirements were demonstrated immediately as the squad again went on the road (in the middle of a virtual monsoon) for the annual inter-state confrontation with perennially nationally ranked Darien. For some reason (probably because both schools develop many great lacrosse players), these teams annually produce sensational barn-burners (e.g. 14-13 for MHS in 2007, Darien on top 16-15 in a 2006 overtime thriller, an 11-9 Manhasset victory in 2001 and, in their 1997 initial meeting, the kids from across the sound by 12-11 in OT).
On June 4, the Seventh Grade Girls’ LISGYLL Lacrosse Team completed their undefeated season with an 11-4 win over Massapequa. Having won the Western Conference title against Wantagh on May 31, the determined team came on strong during another rainy game to beat the Eastern Conference Champs.
On June 22 at a dinner held at the Woodbury Country Club, Manhasset’s David Knowles was honored as the Citibank/News 12 Scholar Athlete of the Year.
On Saturday, June 27, the Rocky Pacent Softball Fund hosted its first “Non-Event” to raise money for a new state-of-the-art ball field at Manhasset High School. Over 160 families participated in the “Non-Event,” and balloons were flying over each house on Saturday.
Nassau County Legislator Judi Bosworth (D-Great Neck) congratulated the members of Manhasset High School’s Boys Varsity Lacrosse Team, the New York State Class “C” Champions and their coach, Bill Cherry, the Nassau County Conference IV Coach of the Year.
