The Manhasset Crew team launched its 2009 spring season winning numerous medals in two prominent New Jersey regattas. The team of 46 rowers and 8 coxswains, along with their coaching staff (Head Coach Hugo Guardado Henriquez (Varsity Men), Assistant Coaches Stephanie Doughty (Varsity Women) and Nick Vlahos (Novice Men and Women), supported by Alan Pedisich and Dan Kozerski) participated first in the Mercer Lake/ISA Sculling Championships on April 18 and then in the New Jersey Scholastic Rowing Championships on April 25.
At the Mercer Lake/ISA Sculling Championship the team had an impressive showing, earning nine medals. These included four First Place gold medals for the Men’s Varsity 4, rowing in a field of 14 entries, (Nick Kavourias (coxswain), Ty Louis, Michael Yee, Sebastian Barerra, Joe Calderone), two boats in the Men’s 2nd Varsity 4 (Bernard Liu (coxswain), Jimmy Krach, Matt LoBello, Hayes Brown, Robbie Hogan; and Nick Bilotto (coxswain) Ty Louis, Michael Yee, Sebastian Barerra, Joe Calderone), and the Women’s Lightweight 4 (Emily Battaglia (coxswain), Elizabeth Henry, Maria Manis, Kerrigan Hummel, Kristin Wilhouski).
On April 28 the Varsity Boys Track Team finished their league schedule with 13 wins and one loss. The team then entered its large meet invitational season with the Port Washington meet, St. Anthony’s, Seahawk meet and Divisions Championships on May 11.
The seniors have been led by David Knowles (captain), Tom Welsh, Esop Baek, Tiaka Nugba and Andrew Wong. David Knowles, a four-year starter, has a 4:32 mile, 10:30 (3200m), 10:16 (steeplechase) and 2:04 (800m). He won the Port mile, the Gold Coast mile and has anchored the 4 x 800 meter to the Division Championships. Tom Welsh has run 4:56 (mile) and 10:46 (3200m) this season for personal bests. Baek has been the top discus scorer (114’9”) and Nugba the top shotput scorer (419) All-Division.
Join in the fun on Friday, May 29 for the tennis “Craze” which comes to Manhasset High School. There will be a D.J. playing the latest hits while everyone has fun on the tennis courts playing drills and games, with lots of prizes.
The Manhasset Lacrosse team defeated Chaminade 9-7 on Chaminade’s home turf last Tuesday, May 12. Conor English scored 5 goals; Jeff Molinari had 1 goal, 2 assists; Zach Koufakis scored 1 goal, 2 assists; Jeff Izzo and Kevin Heenan scored 1 goal each. Goalie Jack Meyer had 19 saves.

Adventures in Learning is celebrating it 40th Anniversary this year. The program, which was established in 1969 as an educational enrichment program, has been dedicated to improving the lives of Manhasset/Great Neck children in need of after school care and instruction. To celebrate this very special anniversary, Adventures is planning the Third Annual Tennis Challenge at the Port Washington Yacht Club on Saturday, June 6, starting at 1 p.m. To accommodate all the participants during the tennis round robin, play will also be held on the courts of Manhasset Bay Yacht Club.
Preparations have long since been under way for the U.S. Open’s return to Bethpage State Park’s Black Course in Farmingdale this June.
At a May 4 Media Day press conference, United States Golf Association officials and local politicians praised U.S. Open organizers and offered information about the upcoming event.
