CYO Update: December 15, 2011

With Patrick Reilly and his talents in South Beach, St. Mary’s fifth grade team 7 squared off with a tough St. Philip Neri Northport team and emerged with a 25–12 win. Alex Racanelli grabbed 11 rebounds and Patrick Weber snared seven. Strong board play bolstered by pressure defense by Jackson Cherry, Louis Perfetto, Joseph Mulholland, Michael Farrell, Steven Vlahakis and John Whelan supported by scoring from Steven Salerno, Nicky Quinn and Timmy Kiggins helped run the record to 4-0.

St. Mary’s seventh grade boys won two games over the weekend to run their record to 5-0. They beat St. Edward 50-21. Brendan Barry and Najon Dorsanvil each had 12 points in the game. In the second game, Christian Andriotis was the high scorer with a season-high 13 points. Barry added 10 and Danny Hedberg had 8 points and a team-high 12 assists.

The Farrell/Quinn eighth grade boys team went 1–1 this past weekend. On Saturday night they took a tough St. Raphael’s team to overtime and came away with the win 58-49. The scoring was led by Alex Alacqua, Tucker Quinn, James Ranieri and Conner Barrett. The defense was led by Stephen Farrell and Peter Papadakos while solid guard play from Eamonn Scaring and Luke Ferraro sealed the victory.

On Sunday evening the team had a lead at half against a strong St. Dominic’s team, but lost by eight points. Scoring was led by Stephen Farrell and Patrick Kennedy. Tucker Quinn, Peter Papadakos and Alex Alacqua led the rebounding while solid defensive play was turned in by Eamonn Scaring, Luke Ferraro, James Ranieri and Conner Barrett.

St. Mary’s sixth grade team (DeMatteis/Zaffiro/Simmons) traveled to Garden City on Sunday to take on St. Joseph for battle of first place. St. Mary’s came out strong in the first quarter, demonstrating good defense and rebounding. After a lackluster second quarter, the boys regained momentum in the second half, and outscored St. Joseph. The boys showed great determination and sportsmanship against a talented opponent but could not muster enough for a win. Assists by Eddie DeMatteis and Chris Papdopoulos helped leading scorers Jadan McDermott and Malcolm Carter. Jack Zaffiro and Devin Kennedy took down rebounds while the speed of Jack Shelly and Ed Jarvis held St. Joseph’s second half scoring.

St. Mary’s fifth grade team coached by R.J. Pogue and Don Newton came up against a very strong St. Francis team from Wantagh. In the early going the game was close thanks to scoring by Chris Alcaraz (3), Devin O’Brien (3), Sean Kenny, Michael Polis and Will Allen (2) and Stelio Katopodis (1) points each. Strong rebounding and tough defense by JP Aliprantis, Andrew Pogue, Sean and Colin Holdrieth, Nicholas Newton and Adan Stefan helped us stay close but in the end St. Francis proved to be to much resulting in a hard fought 39-13 loss.
