Manhasset’s boys and girls crew teams capped off their fall season with a very successful weekend of competition on the Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey.
In mid-November, Manhasset competed in 2000-meter “sprint” races in the Philadelphia Frostbite Regatta. Gold medals were awarded only for first place finishes in each flight and Manhasset had five boats that won their races:
Boat A – 1st Place (Flight 1), Gold: Sarah Gunzburg, Clare McIntee, Dagmara Lapins, Keagan Hanley, Justine Yunakov (coxswain)
Boat B – 1st Place (Flight 3), Gold: Katharine Frost, Juliet Paterek, Celine Rubio, Emily Battaglia, Jessica Kelly (coxswain)
Boat A – 1st Place (Flight 1), Gold: Stefan Hummel, Christian Voto, Daniel Soyak, Tom Quaranta, Alex Kavourias (coxswain)
Boat A – 1st Place (Flight 4), Gold: Katharine Frost, Clare McIntee, Dagmara Lapins, Keagan Hanley, Sarah Gunzburg, Celine Rubio, Jen Juliano, Mari-Catherine Gillis, Justine Yunakov (coxswain)

The team was back in action the following day to close out the season at the 38th annual Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta. Most of the day’s 1500-meter sprint races were flights or “final heats,” with a single gold medal awarded to the top finisher. There were also four high school trophy “elimination events,” with heat races, semi-finals and finals competitions throughout the day. Manhasset boats turned in six gold medal performances and earned two of the four trophies:
Boat A, First Place, Justine Yunakov (coxswain), Katharine Frost, Clare McIntee, Dagmara Lapins, Keagan Hanley. The Women’s Varsity 4+ was a clear leader throughout the day, pulling a first place finish in heats, semi-finals, and ultimately winning finals with a time of 5:54.11, besting the second place finisher by nearly 7 seconds and winning the Braxton Family Trophy for the third consecutive year.
Boat A, 1st Place, Alex Kavourias (coxswain), Stefan Hummel, Christian Voto, Daniel Soyak, Max Johnson. The Men’s Varsity 4+ also was on top throughout the day, pulling a 1st place finish in heats, semi-finals and in the end winning finals with a time of 5:09.54, besting the second place finisher by nearly 7 seconds as well and winning the Rafferty Cup for the second consecutive year.

Head Coach Hugo Guardado-Henriquez stated, “Our coaching staff is extremely pleased with the team’s impressive performance not only in our final regattas but throughout the fall season. Their success is a direct result of intense conditioning efforts and dedication.” He added that he and Assistant Coaches Chris Mare, Tara Marsigliano, Jim Finke, Nick Vlahos and Trainer Dan Kozerski are looking forward to an equally strong spring season.
With the fall season completed, the team will begin optional pre-season training in early January and will return to the water when the Varsity spring season begins in early March.
