Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Anna M. Kaplan, along with her husband Darren and daughter Sarah, were among the spectators lining the shores at Centre Island Beach, enthusiastically cheering on Manhasset’s HS Crew Team at the Long Island Rowing Championships the weekend of May 5-6.
“It’s wonderful to have athletic programs for our youth that develop talent and team spirit and take advantage of our community’s waterways,” stated Mrs. Kaplan. “Rowing is a beautiful sport to watch and I have a lot of respect for the strength and stamina it takes to succeed.” In between the races, Mrs. Kaplan took the opportunity to meet and congratulate Manhasset athletes and parents who participated in the event.
Mano Khatchadourian, Friends of Manhasset Crew (FOMC) chairman, remarked that, “Manhasset is very fortunate to have Anna’s and North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman’s and the town’s support and encouragement for our high school crew program and the sport of rowing.”
Superintendent of Manhasset Schools Charlie Cardillo was also on hand to greet the athletes and their families and show his support for the team. In addition, Senator Jack Martins attended the event and presented the Supervisor’s Cup Women’s Champions Trophy to the girls in Manhasset’s Varsity 8+ boat who won this award. “I am aware of the hard work it takes to be a rower since my daughter rows for her school. The performance of the Manhasset Crew Team is quite impressive. They worked hard, Martins said, and it showed. I want to congratulate Coach Hugo and all the members of the team for an outstanding accomplishment. It takes the support of a community to make the program successful and, on a spring Sunday, the team shined its brightest,”
FOMC President Emily Kavourias added, “It sends a great message to our kids to see that notable figures in our area come out to recognize their efforts and accomplishments.”
