Three Manhasset Crew Team members, Joe Calderone, Elizabeth Henry and Nick Kavourias, were recently honored by top National and State Rowing organizations. Joe Calderone and Elizabeth Henry were named by the New York State Scholastic Rowing Association as the 2009 All State Athletes of the Year. Nick Kavourias was selected to participate in the 2009 Junior Men’s National Team Selection Camp.
Joe Calderone and Elizabeth Henry were selected among top athletes and scholars from across New York State for the top honor of New York State Scholastic Rowing Association Athlete of the Year. They were evaluated based on various criteria, including their erg score (a score obtained from an indoor rowing machine testing distance endurance, speed and fitness), scholastic grade point average, SAT and ACT scores and regatta medals. The Athlete of the Year is awarded to the most outstanding female and male rowers each year for the State. Given the hundreds of high schools that are members of the New York State Scholastic Rowing Association, it was a great tribute to Joe, Elizabeth, the Manhasset Crew Team and school district for both of the 2009 All State Athletes to come from the same team.
Joe Calderone was a senior at Manhasset High School this past year and graduated in June. He attributes the Manhasset Crew Team for providing “many opportunities to challenge myself both physically and mentally, and to extend my limits and capabilities. The Manhasset Crew team helped my closest teammates and me find great opportunities in college, and has helped start many friendships with kids around the country who we otherwise would have never met. It has been an incredible, incomparable experience over the past few years.” Joe, who recently earned his Eagle Scout rank in the Boys Scouts of America and was a four-year member of the Manhasset Science Research Program, will be attending Cornell University in the fall where he will be a member of their rowing team.
Elizabeth Henry will be entering her senior year at Manhasset High School. In addition to her participation in the Manhasset Crew Team, she is a member of the Manhasset Varsity Swim Team since middle school, and a member of many of Manhasset High School’s honor societies including National, Math, Science and Exemplars Honor Societies. She is also a member of the Be like Rachel and World of Difference Clubs, she is working on her Gold Award for Girl Scouts and is a member of the Manhasset Junior Coalition for Breast Cancer. Elizabeth says she enjoys “the team aspect of rowing, there are no heroes, the success depends on how well the boat can work together, and there are very few sports like it.” Elizabeth says “rowing, like swimming, pushes an athlete to limits they did not believe they could achieve, and this has made it rewarding and fulfilling in many ways.”
Nick Kavourias was selected in a national competition of coxswains from around the country to be one of six coxswains to participate in the 2009 Junior Men’s National Team Selection Camp in Princeton, NJ. This camp selects a crew team to represent the United States at the 2009 FISA World Rowing Junior Championships in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France. (FISA is the governing body of the International Federation of Rowing Associations and includes National and International Olympic Committees.) Kavourias is going into his senior year at Manhasset High School.
According to Nick,“The Manhasset Crew Team has played a dominant role in my high school career and has created memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Rowing has opened so many more opportunities for me. I would have never thought I would be able to ever call myself a student-athlete and also compete at the national level. These experiences have given me the chance to apply to colleges that I would have never dreamed of and has allowed me the opportunity to meet great people. I plan to continue another year of crew and also continue my rowing career in college.”
Everyone wishes Joe, Elizabeth and Nick much continued success in their rowing careers.
