On April 7, the Manhasset High School Crew Team held its first 5K Walk/Run fundraiser, which started and ended in the Flower Hill Village Park. More than 300 participants came out to race or stroll through Flower Hill, while raising funds for two great causes.
Proceeds from the event will fund additional equipment for the growing MHS crew team, with 10 percent of monies raised contributed to the Manhasset UFSD Fields Initiative, a fund created to re-turf the MHS Stadium Field and create a new field at Shelter Rock Elementary School. Barbara Thermos, who organized and coordinated the 5K event, noted, ”It was a great way for the community to come together for these causes, connecting with neighbors and friends while getting some exercise on a gorgeous, crisp sunny morning. Both causes support healthy athletic opportunities for Manhasset’s youth.”
Head Coach Hugo Guardado-Henriquez stated, “Our coaching staff was very pleased that our first 2013 5K run was such a success. We had a great turnout and we want to thank everyone, including all the runners from the Manhasset community as well as other towns.” He added, “We would also like to express our appreciation to the athletes from nearby rowing teams who supported our run, including the Sagamore, St. Anthony’s and Huntington teams.”
Medals were presented to top finishers by age category in an awards ceremony at the conclusion of the race.
On behalf of Friends of Manhasset Crew, Event Chair Barbara Thermos expressed appreciation to all those who supported us with donations of goods and other financial contributions: Boathouse Sports, Concept 2, Drink Duets, The Embroidery Shop, Friends of Manhasset Crew, LIFT Gym, McCarney Tours, North Shore Farms, Peconic Builders Real Estate Development, Pirate’s Booty, Andriotis Family, Base Family, Coach Dan and Simone, Conlan, O’Connor and Serres Families, DeSousa Family, Donovan Family, Gahan Family, Henry Family, Kostoulas and Mantikas Families, Lapins Family and Lee Family.
