Port Washington Yacht Club held its Eighth Annual Twilight Keelboat Regatta in August. Thunder and rain was intermittent during the daylight but the evening weather transpired with little trouble. The 7.7 mile race commenced in the early evening with four boats and its sailors whose ages ranged from 14 to 17.
The junior sailors from Port Washington comprised of a team of eight including Ed Condon (Port Washington), Brian Morrissey (Manhasset), Sabrina Lorson(Port Washington), Catarina Catallo (Manhasset), Maggie Bridges (Port Washington), Erin Lyons (Manhasset), Luke Johnston and Stephen Gallo (Mineola). Gallo was skipper of the Port team sailing the yacht, War Horse, a 34 foot boat owned by Dan Griffin.
The competing boats were 34 to 40 feet in length and the junior sailors had to comprise 60% of the boating staff. The first place boat was the Inevitable, a J105 odr, skippered by Joe Pilsic. The Planet Claire, a J105 odr, skippered by Owen Zimmerman took second, the Lapin , a Ben 40.7, skippered by Henry Harris came in third and War Horse, a J105 came in fourth.
The Twiilight Regatta is usually held before the overnight regatta so junior crews can get a taste of nighttime conditions.
