The Manhasset Varsity Cross-Country team wrapped up its regular season last week at Bethpage State Park with an impressive win over a tough North Shore squad to finish as undefeated (13-0) Division and Conference champions. Over the past six seasons, the Indians have been tough to beat, with their only loss coming at the hands of the same North Shore team the previous fall, making this victory all the more satisfying. Senior captain Matt Weilep (17:08) led all scorers across the finish line of the 5K course as he has done all season, followed by Tommy Fruhauf (17:35), Carter Paterson (17:41), Willy McNamara (18:00), and co-captain John Marcucci (18:07) who claimed the fifth spot to seal the victory. Finishing right behind were Russell Silva (18:10), Riley Barnes (18:21), and Nicky Harris (18:23), who along with our top 5 scorers, earned individual All-Conference honors based on their performances throughout the season. Junior John Reddington (18:31), and seniors Brad Spilka (19:28) and Pranay Lunavat (19:53), all ran career bests to help Manhasset wrap up their 30th championship season.
The success of the varsity squad has also spurred the development of our junior varsity participants. George Yiachos (19:01) and Athan Anderson (19:03) just missed breaking the 19-minute barrier on Tuesday, as they lead all competitors to the finish line in personal best times. Matt Sears (19:28), Anthony Varnas (19:35), and Harrison Barsky (19:39) also ran to career bests to help lead the team to a convincing victory in their dual meet against North Shore. This season has seen more sub-20 minute 5K’s than ever before, as twenty young men have already surpassed this barrier, including Kyle Bentley (19:02), Tyson Morgano (19:45), Andrew Polis (19:54), Austin Plansker (19:59), and several more – Luke LaSpina (20:12), Michael Lee (20:21), Dan Petruso (20:21), and others - poised to do so in the upcoming post season meets.
The Indians will now prepare for the County Championships on Oct. 26 and then the state qualification meet the following weekend, as they seek a chance to represent Section VIII at the New York State Cross-Country Championships on Nov. 9 in Queensbury, NY. Both races will be held at Bethpage State Park at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
