MHS Girl's Varsity Tennis Team Wins Conference I Title

The 2013 girl’s varsity tennis team, led by their senior co-captains, Courtney DiGia & Nicole Koskovolis, posted a 13-1 record and won the Conference I tennis championship. The two co-captains, both of whom played singles, were joined by sophomore Amanda Foo to round out the singles lineup. Doubles players included seniors Liz Arenare, Amelia Conner, Hope Gillan, Caitlin Gleason, Jamie Lopez, and Stephanie Rohn, junior Courtney Connors, sophomore Brooke DiGia, freshman Lia Frankis, and eighth grader Madeline Clinton.

In playoffs for the county championship, Manhasset advanced to the final match but fell to Port Washington by the score of 4-3. Varsity tennis coach David Dorman said, “We’ve won a number of conference and division titles in the past, but this is the first Conference I title in 25 years. This is a very special group of girls, and one of the finest teams I’ve ever had the honor of coaching.”

Several of the girls won individual honors for their play. C.DiGia, Foo, and Koskovolis were each named All-Conference, while Clinton, Connors, B. DiGia, and Frankis were each named All-Division.

At the Sec.VIII tournament held at Eisenhower Park, C. DiGia and Foo teamed up to play doubles and earned All-County honors, while Koskovolis earned All-State honors, finishing as runner-up for the Nassau County singles title. She went on to represent Manhasset High, as part of the Nassau County All-State team, and won the consolation bracket tournament at the New York State Girls Tennis Championship tournament that was held in Albany.

The team is graduating eight seniors and will have some very big tennis shoes to fill. Coach Dorman expressed confidence in the future saying, “Yes, we’re losing eight wonderful girls, including some of the finest I’ve ever coached. However, our junior varsity, led by coach Eileen Cuneo, also had an outstanding season, so our tennis future continues to look bright; I’m already looking forward to the challenge of the next season.”
