Manhasset Boys Varsity Track Wins Four Division Championships

On April 28 the Varsity Boys Track Team finished their league schedule with 13 wins and one loss. The team then entered its large meet invitational season with the Port Washington meet, St. Anthony’s, Seahawk meet and Divisions Championships on May 11.

The seniors have been led by David Knowles (captain), Tom Welsh, Esop Baek, Tiaka Nugba and Andrew Wong. David Knowles, a four-year starter, has a 4:32 mile, 10:30 (3200m), 10:16 (steeplechase) and 2:04 (800m). He won the Port mile, the Gold Coast mile and has anchored the 4 x 800 meter to the Division Championships. Tom Welsh has run 4:56 (mile) and 10:46 (3200m) this season for personal bests. Baek has been the top discus scorer (114’9”) and Nugba the top shotput scorer (419) All-Division.

Manhasset Boy All-County Athletes honored at a recent dinner - Kyle Howell (10th), Patrick Love (11th), Joe Nassirian (11th), David Knowles (12th) and Andrew Choi (11th).

The juniors have been a huge, strong part of the team. Stuart Hicks has been the top meet scorer on the team with his (21’10”) long jump, (41’11”) triple jump and (6’1”) high jump. Hicks won part, Bob Barreta Classic and two Division titles (high jump – triple jump). Joe Nassirian (9:55) 3200 meters is undefeated this season in 3200 meters and won the division crown. Nassirian has had an excellent year cross-country, both indoor and outdoor season. Patrick Love (4:41) mile, (2:05) 800 meters and Joe Zahn 4:47 (mile) and 2:04) 800 meters have had huge seasons scoring in all meets and divisions championships. Love and Zahn, and Andres Choi (55) 400, 209 (800) are an important part of the championship 4 x 800 meter team. Mario Gagliano has led the hurdle races 400 m (61.9) and the 110 HH (16.4). Gagliano was All-Division and All-Conference in both, and the best Manhasset hurdler in many years. Tyler Yim was the top junior sprinter this year – 100m, 200m and 4 x 100 meters.

The sophomores also have made strong contributions to the overall team effort. Kyle Howell is the top scorer in all meets with his (5’8”) high jump, (19’1) long jump and (40’2) triple jump. Princeton Palmer has, in his first season, become the best sprinter on the team (11.4) 100-meters, (23.9) 200-meter and anchor on the 4 x 100 meter team. Palmer scored in all his Invitational Meets and was All-Division and All-County (soph). Brian Morris has been a top scorer in the weight events shot put (37) and discus (97’9) and Gary Tibb’s (5’6) high jump, hurdles, discus and shot put has scored points in four different events.

For the first time in many years the freshmen have scored a lot of points for the team. Charlie Morris (10:16) 3200m, 4:47 (mile), 11:16 (steeplechase) has had one of the finest seasons for a freshman in 30 years. He was county champion and All-Division in several events. Stephen Bourguet (8th) also made strong scoring efforts in several meets and was county champion in the freshman mile. Bourguet ran (4:50) mile, 2:16 (800m) and was a fourth member of the Division Championship in the 4 x 800 meter relay team. Christian Salvaterra in his first season was All-County in the 800-meter (2:11) and was top scorer in the 400-meter for the season.

The team now moves to the County Finals, Easterns and State Meet.
