The Manhasset High School Crew Team held its Spring Awards dinner on June 6 at the Strathmore Vanderbilt Country Club. The team was very honored to have two distinguished guests attend the dinner to recognize its accomplishments this season-State Senator Craig Johnson and Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman.
In addition to the awards presented by the team’s coaches, Senator Craig Johnson presented The New York State Scholastic Rowing Association’s (NYSSRA) Scholar/Athlete Team Awards.
For many years, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) has offered a similar award to high school athletes who compete in all other varsity sports. However, NYSPHSAA does not govern the sport of rowing, so the Scholastic Rowing Association implemented the award for crew athletes to acknowledge the academic achievements of New York State’s scholastic rowers.
The NYSSRA Scholar/Athlete Team Award Program recognizes nominated varsity high school teams and clubs who meet certain criteria, including a team grade point average of 90 percent or above during the current competitive season. Boys and girls teams are nominated separately, and a minimum of nine rowers/coxswains is required to be considered for Scholar/Athlete Team recognition.
Senator Johnson congratulated the team on the significant success it achieved this season and stated, “This new program allows for recognition of the great work that you are doing both in and out of the classroom. It’s great to have the opportunity to pay tribute to these students who are able to balance their educational and athletic commitments, and excel at both.”
Praising the crew team’s performance, Supervisor Kaiman said: “It is often stated that the biggest part of achieving success is showing up. Everyone being honored here today obviously showed up, not only in the arena of your chosen sport, but also in the classroom. You represent the future of North Hempstead and I am proud to know that the town I lead will, in the next generation, rest in very capable hands. I wish you best of luck at the Youth Nationals.”
Accepting the award on behalf of their respective teams were Varsity Boys Captains Hayes Brown and Nick Kavourias and Varsity Girls Captains Margot Cyprus and Elizabeth Henry. Senator Johnson presented individual awards to the following Scholar / Athletes:
