Property Tax Exemption Workshop

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, and Nassau County Legislator Mike Venditto will be sponsoring a Property Tax Exemption Workshop from 1 to 3 pm at the Massapequa Library, 40 Harbor Lane in Massapequa Park. Tax exemption specialists from the Nassau County Department of Assessment will be equipped with computers linked to the county’s database, and property tax exemption applications for Basic STAR, Enhanced STAR, senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, veterans, volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians will be processed. Tax exemption specialists will also provide assistance and answer any questions residents have about these exemptions. Homeowners who will be filing for an exemption should bring copies of any documentation that is required for the property tax exemption, including proof of age, proof of residency and proof of income. Leathernecks Barbecue Cookout

Recognizing veterns returning home from Afganistan, the Leathernecks Motorcycle Club New York Chapter is hosting a barbecue cookout fundraiser benefiting the families of marines. The event kicks off at 1 p.m. at 99 New York Ave.in Massapequa, three blocks north of Sunrise Highway, off Hicksville Road. Teen Summer Reading Last Chance Book Discussion

The Massapequa Public Library hosts a meeting to discuss required titles from the 7th and 8th grade Massapequa Public Schools list of summer reading. Discussions will cover Freak the Mighty, by Rodman Philbrick for 7th graders and Nothing But the Truth by Avi for 8th graders. Library hosts will also answer the questions on students’ summer reading forms so assignments can be completed. Pizza and refreshments will be served. Blood Donations

Donate at the Massapequa Presbyterian Community Church, 150 Pittsburgh Ave., on Friday, September 6 from 4 p.m. until 8:30 pm. Walk-ins welcome or call 347-865-4000 for an appointment to reduce wait time. Ask about the Alyx Component Collection System that uses a smaller needle and donates twice as many red blood cells. There is no substitute for human blood. 

A Brush With Sandy

Studio 5404 Art Space presents “A Brush With Sandy,” a juried art show representing artwork inspired by Superstorm Sandy at 5404 Merrick Rd, at 7:30 p.m. Profits from sales will go towards Sandy relief. Poetry readings by Bards Initiative publication, “Songs of Sandy” and poet laureate Ed Stever. Refreshments will be served. Suggested donations of $5. The exhibit will show through September 30. Adopt-A-Battalion

Adopt-A-Battalion is hosting it’s first annual “Support Our Troops” dinner on September 7 at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of the Island Knights of Columbus Hall, 2 East Gate Rd. in Massapequa Park. Mommy & Me

Beginning September 11 and running every Wednesday through June, Massapequa Park offers a Mommy & Me program at Brady Park. Classes will meet on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. There is no registration fee and class size is limited.
