“The Bunsen Burners,” a Science Olympiad Team from Alfred G. Berner Middle School, Massapequa, won four medals at the recent 2013 Western Long Island Regional Science Olympiad Competition. The team placed ninth among 43 teams after competing in more than 20 events that spanned the disciplines of earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, and technology.
Trevor Dawideit and Ryan Catapano placed third in a category called “Crime Busters.” Kevin Hitchings, Christopher Lam, and Michael Lam placed sixth in “Experimental Design.” Morgan Schnee and John Yevoli placed fourth in both “Mousetrap Vehicle” and “Rotor Egg Drop.”
Additionally, ninth-graders Laura Glynn, John Merz, and Kevin Hitchings; eighth-graders Christopher Hadsall, Giovanni D’Agostino, Stephen Urli, and Liam Bach; and seventh-graders Luke Colavita and Ella Schnee, also competed. “The team could not have gotten this far without the assistance of student coaches Brandan Lawrence, Matthew Lam, David Schector, and Andrew Lam,” said Science Olympiad coaches Theresa O’Connor and Scott Luxenberg.
