Family and friends of the Kearney family of Massapequa are hosting a fundraising benefit for Ella Kate Kearney on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 2 – 6 p.m. at the Nutty Irishman, 323 Main St. in Farmingdale. The Rotary Club of Great Neck has offered to support the event.
Ella is the two-year old daughter of Brian Kearney and Keri Kearney who was recently diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a malignant tumor on her spine.Brian is a floor installer with Local 2287, District Council of Carpenters and Keri is a guidance counselor with the Amityville School District.
Following emergency surgery on Sept. 9 to remove much of the tumor, Ella’s family received the devastating news that Ella would require eight months of chemotherapy as well as radiation treatments that will take place out of state.
Although Ella’s family has medical insurance to cover her treatment, her parents will need to take considerable time off from work and will have large expenses such as deductibles, travel for treatments and prescriptions. Kearney’s friends and family have come together to raise much-needed funds to help them with these costs.
“Ella is a brave little girl,” said Joseph Galante, Ella’s granduncle and a member of the event committee, “But Ella and her family need friendship, support and prayers in the upcoming months as she goes through these difficult treatments. The benefit on Nov. 12 will show Ella’s parents that the community stands behind them and that they are not alone in this fight.”
The suggested donation for the event is $50 per person (children under 12 are free) and admission includes a full buffet as well as one free draft beer, wine or soda. The event will also feature entertainment, raffles and a silent auction. The committee would greatly appreciate any donations of gift cards, services, merchandise or other prizes for the raffles.
“A diagnosis of cancer for a child as young as Ella can be devastating to a family,” said Nate Green, a family friend from Old Bethpage who is also serving on the committee, “Thankfully, the Kearney’s have deep faith as well as a loving, supportive network of friends and family who are doing everything they can to help them through this most difficult time. Please join us in supporting the Kearney family through your generous donation.”
