Sons of Italy-Columbus Lodge #2143 (“CL”) First Vice President and Scholarship Chairman Ed Bochynski recently hosted the lodge’s annual scholarship ceremony.
Several Massaspequa High School students were honored, including Daniele Giorgio who received the Excellence in Italian Language Award, Nicholas Barbieri, who received the High Scholastic Achievement Award, Stephanie Gillam who received the Zabbia Memorial Award and Jake Spero who received a general scholarship.
Michael Costa of Farmingdale High School and Casey Vieni of Plainedge High School also received the Excellence in Italian Language Award.
Scholarships were also awarded to graduating high school seniors Tracey Cheek from Farmingdale High School, plus Christina Floridia, Victoria Pallante and Danielle Iovino of Plainedge High School.
Other recipients were Bianca Esposito of Oceanside High School, Casondra Peretore of Blair Academy, Todd R. Anzalone of Sachem High School, Alphonse Betz of Huntington High School and Joseph Fabian of Chaminade High School.
Among the dignitaries that addressed the award winners and offered the students words of wisdom and encouragement were NYS Grand Lodge President Thomas Lupo, NYS Assemblyman Joe Saladino, Nassau County Legislatures Peter Schmitt and Joe Belesi, TOB Clerk Steve Labriola, TOB Councilman Joe Pinto.
The Columbus Lodge President Keith Wilson and Ladies Auxiliary Vice President Denise Iannone presented the students with citations.
Following the awards presentation, retired Chief Warrant Officer William Iannone closed the ceremonies by leading the assembly in “God Bless America.” The Columbus Lodge collation committee of Chairman Mike Bonavia and his crew of Eddie Esposito and John Giovenco served lunch to the award winners, their families and the dignitaries in attendance.
In other OSIA news, The Columbus Lodge Tony Ragno will hold a trip to Broadway to see Wicked on Sept. 13. And the lodge will hold its annual Italian Feast and Festival on Sunday, Sept. 30 on North Broadway in North Massapequa.
