Eric Brody of Massapequa Park has always been one to see the bigger picture in life. When he was a sophomore at St. Anthony’s High School, Brody was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, a roadblock that immediately required him to change his diet and lifestyle.
“I was always interested in physical activity,” says the 25-year-old Brody, who played roller hockey in high school, “but being diagnosed with Crohn’s took my interest in health and exercise to another level.”
Brody went on to graduate from Manhattan College with a degree in Finance and Economics. It was there that he met 25-year-old Ben Hart, his roommate and business partner who also shared an affinity for health and fitness.
“At the time I met Ben, he was training to be a boxer in the Olympics. So I saw then, his drive, motivation and the bigger picture of how dedicated he was and some of those values were instilled in me as well,” says Brody.
It was after graduation, when Brody was working at Citi Group and Ben at Equinox, where the idea of Qinetic, their newly launched company, was formed.
“Ben came up with the idea and asked me to come on and help him with little things here and there. He saw that I had some skills that complemented what he was doing, so it was a great match,” says Brody who’s own interest in health and wellness was a plus.
The two went into business together, leading Brody to take a risk and quit his full-time job. Hart, a personal trainer, also cut down his clientele to focus on their new venture. Although both received support from family and friends, starting a new business in a weak economy was still a risky endeavor. Fortunately, Brody and Hart’s combined backgrounds made establishing a foundation a bit easier. One of Hart’s clients, Liam Lynch, took an interest in Qinetic and became the company’s investor and chair.
“Our tagline is, Qinetic: The Fitness and Wellness Network,” says Brody. “We’re aiming to become the platform online where you can showcase your wellness life, whether you like to work out, are a hardcore athlete, or just enjoy a healthy lifestyle,” he continues.
Brody and Hart’s main goal for Qinetic is to make healthy living more social, by giving people the opportunity to interact with professionals, view their services, pick their brains for advice, follow businesses and find great content on fitness and wellness.
The idea of making Qinetic accessible to everyone by playing to different strengths was key. Enter, the Q coaches.
“The Q coaches bring a wide range of information to the table,” says Brody. “Whatever my question is, I have a variety of coaches that can probably answer anything I throw at them.”
There are seven Q coaches in total: a dance instructor and choreographer, a nutritionist, a holistic doctor, an orthopedic and sports medicine doctor, a women’s fitness instructor (dancer), a men’s fitness instructor (trainer and break dancer) and a yoga instructor.
“Having so many different backgrounds in one place gives people the opportunity to go out of their comfort zones and try new things,” says Brody.
Those interested can choose to sign up as an enthusiast, business, or professional.
“If you sign up as an enthusiast, we want you to go on and connect with others who share your interests. As a business, you can showcase your brand and personality, and for a professional, you can interact with clientele and extend your services,” says Brody of the company’s services.
Since the online launch of Qinetic took place in June, Brody and Hart have been doing all they can to garner attention for the company. Social media platforms have played a huge role in spreading the word.
“I think we have a pretty good well rounded approach for now, but being a health and fitness company, we really need to be out there on the ground and interacting with those people to show them that we’re actually living the brand,” Brody says of Qinetic’s future marketing techniques.
Founders Brody and Hart see big things down the road.
“We want to be the one stop shop for everything wellness and be the one place you go for anything fitness related. We have visions of making this a household name,” says Brody.
Offering a piece of advice to those who may be in the same spot, Brody recommends a good dose of inner trust.
“Don’t be afraid to do something you’re passionate about. Things will be tough for a while, but if trust in yourself and what you want to do, things have a way of working out.”
