Helen M. Courtney, of Bethpage, formerly of North Massapequa, passed away February 25, 2010. Partner of Harry Cummings. Predeceased in 1979 by her husband, James J. Courtney. Mother of Mary Bencivengo (Charles), Paul (Heather), Clara Blodget (Bob), Claudia Geier (Bill), James (Joan), Christopher (Patricia), Helen (Tony) and Brian (Susan). Grandmother of 19. John T. McGuire, of North Massapequa, died on Feb. 25, 2010. Husband of the late Grace. Father of Cormac McGuire. Also survived by many other family members and friends. On Jan. 28 2010, Alex Eliassof, an original founding member of A & D Offset Printers, Ltd., which opened in the early ‘80s, passed away. Coincidentally, it was on his 89th birthday. Alex was a very well-known, liked and respected man. He will be missed very dearly by family and friends and will forever remain in their hearts and minds. Alex was also a member of many clubs and organizations.
Alex was a WWII veteran in the United States Navy.
Alex is survived by his wife Nina (Sarah) Eliassof; his son Mark Eliassof; grandson Adam Eliassof; and granddaughter Tara Eliassoff.
Known as the ultimate caregiver, Mr. Harnett shepherded the care of thousands of Long Islanders in his role as president/CEO of Family & Children’s Association, a human care agency serving Long Island’s neediest population. Mr. Harnett passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 23, 2010.
In addition to his role at Family & Children’s, Mr. Harnett served as advisor to The Health and Welfare Council of Long Island, member (formerly, Secretary of the Board and member of the Executive Committee); The Kimmel Housing Development Foundation, Inc., member, Board of Directors; Long Island Federally Qualified Health Center, Chair, Board of Directors; New York State Association of Family Service Agencies, Vice President and Chair of the Advocacy Committee; New York State Health Foundation, Special Opportunity Grants, Peer Review Committee; United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Consultant, Management Training; The United Way of Long Island, Vice President, Agency Executives Council; Anna and Philip Kimmel Foundation, Advisor and Community Advocates, Board member.
Westbury native Damon “Dave” Mock who, for more than two decades, was best known as the “voice” of the Green Dragons, passed away suddenly Dec. 26 from a heart attack. Mr. Mock, who had suffered a mild stroke in September 2009 that hindered his ability to communicate, was just 41 years old.
Kathleen A. Sklarsky, of Massapequa, passed away at her home with her family by her side on Dec. 6, 2009. Mother of Michael (Debbie), Kevin (Kelly), Kathleen Russo, and Brian (Susan). Daughter of Ann Ryan. Grandmother of Amy (Frankie), Kori (Edgar), Keith, Quinn, Conor and Maya. Arrangements were made by Arthur F. White Funeral Home. Funeral Mass was held Dec. 10 at St. William the Abbott RC Church with private cremation following.
Nicholas V. DeScetto, of North Massapequa, passed away Nov. 10, 2009. Husband of the late Phyllis. Father of Nicholas (Joanne) DeScetto and the late Barbara (John) Timpanaro. Grandfather of Nick, Teri, Thomas, Barbara Ann Reed, John Jr., and 12 great-grandchildren. Brother of Nettie and Dora. Arrangements were made by Arthur F. White Funeral Home. A religious service was held Nov. 13 with interment following at Calverton National Cemetery.
