Thursday, 09 May 2013 00:00The smell of fried carnival fare and beer wafted down Central Avenue as I was snapping my last few photos of patrons from BlüPlanet for Free Comic Book Day last Saturday.
I could hear sounds of children laughing and screaming for joy and as I got closer I realized The Massapequa Street Fair was already in full swing.
I walked up to a group of people and for the first time in my life, introduced myself as editor. People’s apprehension at the sight of my lens was washed away with a simple, “Hi, I’m with the Observer.”
In my experience, parents always get very tense when there is a camera around their child. It felt pretty cool to have credentials and a reputation to stand behind as I pointed my Nikon at their laughing children riding in big green metal dinosaurs.
Snapping away, I not only captured images, I got to hear the stories of the very people we try and reach every week. The stories that matter to my readers matter to me. I am glad I got the opportunity to speak with so many Massapequans with so many amazing ideas.
It is my goal to produce content that reflects what Massapequans are concerned about. In the coming months I look forward to having more interactions with the good people of Massapequa. I welcome your ideas and I look forward to hearing from you.
